Abstract: An Environmental Control System (ECS) for aircraft is provided. The ECS includes a heat exchanger (HX) and an air conditioning unit (ACU) upstream of the heat exchanger. The heat exchanger receives flows of hot air bled from a plurality of aircraft engines and flows of cold ambient air drawn from the aircraft exterior for use by the heat exchanger and ACU for heating and cooling the interior cabin of the aircraft. The ECS may operate in one of several modes, whether the heat exchanger and air conditioning unit are operating normally or have failed. In a normal mode, the ACU and heat exchanger operate in series. In an “ACU only” mode, the ACU operates without the heat exchanger. In an “HX only” mode, the heat exchanger operates without the ACU. In an “ECS off” mode, both the heat exchanger and ACU are bypassed.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention relate to a winglet for an end or tip of an aircraft wing. The winglet includes an inner portion that curves upward having a large radius of curvature near the wing, a middle portion having a small radius of curvature forming a bend, and an outer portion having a large radius of curvature extending to a tip of the winglet. The winglet lowers induced drag of the wing and improves aircraft performance especially for wing tip extensions that extend upwards about equal to or slightly more than outwards.

Abstract: An articulating armrest includes a first protrusion and a second protrusion that protrude from a member a predetermined spacing apart. Each protrusion aligns within a separate track within a housing configured for stowing the armrest within a seat back. The two tracks include straight and curved portions configured to articulate the armrest. Specifically, the armrest moves along a curvilinear path between stowed and deployed positions by translating along the tracks and pivoting about the second protrusion. The armrest may stow in a seat back and beneath the seat bottom to provide a full length armrest when deployed, and the armrest may stow flush with the seat back for sitting against. Mechanical tension may be provided to automatically deploy the armrest, and a rotational damper and a gas spring may be used to control the speed at which the armrest deploys.

Abstract: A method for retrofitting an aircraft air conditioning unit drainage system comprises the step of removing drain pipe from the unit housing. A hole from which the drain pipe extends is plugged. A first location within a unit housing is determined where during operation of the unit air pressure is lower than at a second location. A second location below the first location is also determined where pooling occurs. A first and a second conduit with first and second internal diameters are respectively located at the first and the second locations. The first conduit and the second conduit are connected to a third conduit which extends generally vertically and which has a third internal diameter that is generally equal to the first internal diameter. A fourth conduit with a fourth internal diameter that is less than the second internal diameter is connected to the third conduit below the second location.

Abstract: A system and method for removing condensate from an air conditioning unit is disclosed. A conduit includes an outlet portion that is connected to a chamber of a housing of the unit at a first location, and an inlet portion that is connected to the chamber at a second location where condensate accumulates. A gravitational separator portion which extends below the second location is connected to the outlet portion and the inlet portion. A draining portion having an orifice for allowing condensate to exit the conduit is connected to the gravitational separator portion below the second location. The first location is chosen such that during operation of the unit the pressure at the first location is less than the pressure at the second location.

Abstract: An internally heated and pressurized system for fabricating a composite laminate structure and method for use thereof is disclosed. One of a plurality of thin, thermally conductive bond tools, prepreg fiber reinforced composite layers, and a pressure applying membrane are nested within a heated base, and then covered by a pressure sealed cover. The system is pressurized through the pressure sealed cover. The pressure causes the pressure applying membrane to force the prepreg fiber reinforced composite layers onto the upper surface of the bond tool. The heated base transfers heat to the composite layers via the bond tool, which heats and cures the composite layers together and to a shape determined by the upper surface of the bond tool. Each bond tool is formed with a generic lower surface for nesting within the heated base and an upper surface for forming composite layers into the shape of a specific part.
