Hypochlorous acid; hypobromous acid. - in making chlor- or bromhydrins by the action of hypochlorous or hypobromous acid upon gaseous olefines, the acid is prepared by reaction of halogen gas upon water in the presence of excess of a substance which reacts with hydrochloric or hydrobromic acid but not with hypochlorous or hypobromous acid yielding a solution containing practically no free halogen or hydrochloric or hydrobromic acids. The excees is present during the formation of the chlor- or brom-hydrin. Suitable substances are salts of weak acids such as carbonates, bicarbonates, acetates, or borates, or acid salts of strong acids such as di-sodium phosphate. Insoluble salts such as calcium borate or calcium carbonate in the form of soft limestone or pressed blocks of precipitated chalk may be used. Gases containing mixtures of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons such as are obtained by destructive distillation of petroleum products or alcohol may be treated. As propylene is reacted upon first, the operation may be conducted in stages to obtain first propylene chlorhydrin and then ethylene chlorhydrin. Hypochlorous acid is prepared by passing chlorine through inlets H into a chamber B containing granular material, which may consist of calcium borate or calcium carbonate, over which is distributed a solution of a salt of weak acid, such as borax, prepared in a vessel G. The solution of hypochlorous acid passes through water-seals a and falls in a shower through a chamber C through which a current of gas containing olefines passes from an inlet L to an outlet M. The liquid flows into a tank K, in which it is cooled to remove boric acid, and may be passed through the same or a similar apparatus. The chlorhydrin is separated by distillation or by extraction with ether, gasoline, carbon tetrachloride or other solvent. Specifications 22309/10 and 128,635 are referred to.
