Abstract:
The invention provides a process for the preparation of a hydroxymethylated terpene analog, for example (+) or (-) perillyl alcohol, which process comprises contacting a terpene analog having a terminal methyl group, for example D- or L-limonene, with a microbial cell, which microbial cell is capable of expressing a monooxygenase capable of terminal hydroxylation of an n-alkane.
Abstract:
A two-step system for preparing biomaterials from polymeric precursors is disclosed. The method involves (a) shaping the polymeric precursors by inducing thermal gelation of an aqueous solution of the polymeric precursors and (b) curing the polymeric precursors by cross-linking reactive groups on the polymeric precursors to produce a cured material. The curing reaction involves either a Michael-type addition reaction or a free radical photopolymerization reaction in order to cross-link the polymeric materials. The biomaterials produced by this method have a variety of biomedical uses, including drug delivery, microencapsulation, and implantation.
Abstract:
The invention provides methods for the preparation of multiblock copolymers, dispersions of multiblock copolymers, vesicles and micelles containing multiblock copolymers, and oxidative degradation products of multiblock copolymers.

Provided are dies (300, 600, 1000) having a first section for orienting material being pressed through the die (300, 600, 1000) and a second section for shaping the oriented material into a desired form. In an embodiment, the surface area for shaping the oriented material into a desired form is limited Also provided are polymer articles and processes for making the same. In an embodiment, the processes employ the dies (300, 600, 1000).
Abstract:
The present document relates to a method for producing macro-porous materials comprising the following steps: a) synthesis of narrowly dispersed cross-linked polymeric particles starting from a monomer and a cross-linker in an emulsion polymerization; b) swelling of the particles with a liquid comprising at least an additional charge of monomer and cross-linker and subsequent destabilisation; c) initiating the reaction of the swelled particles to form a monolithic structure. The corresponding monolithic structures can be very efficiently functionalised if after the synthesis of the polymeric particles in step a) and before the initiation of the reaction of the swelled particles in step c) the polymeric particles are chemically functionalised or prepared for subsequent functionalization of the monolithic structure.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a recombinant binding protein comprising at least one derivative of the Src homology 3 domain (SH3) of the FYN kinase, wherein at least one amino acid in or positioned up to two amino acids adjacent to the src loop and/or at least one amino acid in or positioned up to two amino acids adjacent to the RT loop is substituted, deleted or added. Furthermore, the invention is directed to fusion proteins comprising a binding protein according to the invention fused to a pharmaceutically and/or diagnostically active component. In addition, the invention concerns nucleotides coding for these binding and/or fusion proteins as well as corresponding vectors and host cells. Last but not least, the present invention relates to the use of binding and/or fusion proteins of the present invention for preparing a medicament or a diagnostic means as well as to pharmaceutical or diagnostic compositions comprising said binding and/or fusion proteins.
Abstract:
An arrangement for displaying information on a display surface is provided, the arrangement comprising a computing unit and a projecting unit. The computing unit is capable of supplying a display control signal to the projecting unit and to thereby cause the projecting unit to project a display image calculated by the computing unit onto the display surface. The arrangement further includes a detecting unit, the detecting unit being capable of detecting a pointing signal applied to the display surface by a user and of supplying, depending on the pointing signal, a pointing information to the computing unit. The computing unit can calculate the display image including at least one image unit, wherein at least one of the position, the size and of the shape of the at least one image unit is dependent on the pointing information.
Abstract:
Unique labels for security or identification purposes, methods of making the labels and uses for the labels are described herein. The label is formed from one or more crystalline materials, optionally in combination with a non¬ crystalline material, or from a combination of polymers, and has a unique, detectable pattern. In one embodiment, the label is formed from a crystalline material, preferably a metallic material, which naturally contains a unique grain structure, with unique reflective properties. In a preferred embodiment, the label is formed of a metallic material that has been recrystallized to enlarge the size of the grains so that they are visible to the unaided human eye. In another embodiment, the label is formed from a combination of two or more polymers, which are mixed together at elevated temperatures and/or in solvents and form a unique pattern upon removal of the solvent and/or cooling. Optionally, the label contains an identifier in the form of words, numbers, or letters, or a combination thereof. The label can be placed on any item or document. Following manufacture of the label, it is imaged with a particular light source or combination of light sources at one or more imaging angles; the label is numbered; and data describing the image, angle data and number are stored, hi an alternative embodiment, the pattern may be discernable by applying a liquid or vapor to the surface. Preferably the data includes a stored image. In the preferred use of the label and security system, this information is only known by the end user of the identification system. To verify the authenticity of the labeled item, the label is imaged at the same angles as the stored data and compared to the stored image using pattern-recognition software.
Abstract:
A system used in arm therapy comprises a plurality of drives. A first drive (11) and a second drive (26) determine the position of an upper arm rotation module (16, 17), the upper arm of a user being fixed by means of a cuff (10). The upper arm rotation module (16, 17) is a two-piece structure and is provided with a third rotation drive (29) for rotating the upper arm cuff (10), which is positioned inwards (17) and substantially has the shape of a hollow cylinder when closed, about its main axis in relation to the outer part (16) of the upper arm rotation module (16, 17). The upper arm rotation module (16, 17) is linked with a wrist rotation module (20, 21) via an elbow rotation module (22, 23) which can be rotated at an angle thereto and is embodied similar to the upper arm rotation module. The inventive system allows an internal and external shoulder rotation, flexion or extension of the elbow and pronation/supination of the forearm, which is effected as a relative movement of the cuffs (8, 9 and 10) due to the various drives.
