    Abstract: 1434658 Smoke particle detector using scattered light ELECTRO SIGNAL LAB Inc 30 Oct 1973 [25 July 1973] 50507/73 Heading G1A An optical particle detector comprises a housing with lamp 8 to direct light on a path along its axis A1 into dark chamber 6 enclosed therein and with photo-sensitive device 13 responsive to light scattered by particles in said path and a particle simulating member 20 movably mounted on the housing with portion 24 movable through the path for scattering a known intensity of light to photosensitive device 13. The housing comprises bottom 1 and top 2 and cylindrical side wall 3, bearing foam pads 4, admitting smoke but not light. Exciter lamp 8 has filament coil 9 with a straight axis and lens 11 beams light through passage 12. Cell 13 views chamber 6 through lens 18 on axis A2 120 degrees from axis A. Photo-cell 14 receives direct light from lamp 8 to balance aging effects of cell 13. The cells 13, 14 are connected through terminals 17, 19 to alarm circuit board 15. Preferably the alarm operates at 2-10% smoke obscuration. Simulator 20 comprises a wire bell crank with fingergrip 21, shaft 22, held in snap sockets in bosses 26, and spot welded 34 S.W.G. wire 24 used to scatter light from detector zone Z and angularly offset by 25 degrees from U-bend 23, whose rotation is limited by a set screw. Preferably the whole of simulator 20 has a dull black oxide finish with a light waxing.

    Abstract: 1370811 Smoke detector ELECTRO SIGNAL LAB Inc 10 Dec 1971 [3 June 1971] 57448/71 Heading G1A A photo-electric smoke detector operating on the light-scatter principle is provided with two photo-cells, one 1 monitoring the area 4 under test, and the other 2, provided to compensate for ageing and variations in operating conditions (e.g. temperature applied voltage and lamp intensity charges &c.), monitoring light only from the source 8. The latter reference cell receives the light via an adjustable alternator so as to balance the cell outputs in the "no-smoke" condition and a diffuser to spread the light over the whole of the photo-sensitive area of the reference cell and thus prevent ageing of only one part of the surface area. The alternator and diffuser may take a number of forms: in Figs. 1, 2, a screw plug 22 and a frosted glass disc 23 are provided; in Fig. 3, the passage from ballshaped lens 9 is coated with a diffusing white paint, and a screw plug 22a in the form of a circular vane having diffusing surfaces, are provided; in Fig. 5, in the straight part of the passage a screw plug 22 as in Fig. 1 and a translucent cylindrical diffuser 31 are provided. The volume monitored 4 is comprised by a semicircular wall 4 and upper and lower walls of porous material which excludes ambient light but freely admits air and airborne particles.
