    Abstract: The uprating of existing jet engines increases the operating temperatures within the engines and also increases the tendency for flashback in some afterburner type engines. Afterburner type engines include a pilot fuel delivery pipe (65) which is included between inner and outer annular members (71,73) of a flameholder assembly (51). Downstream from the pilot, partitions (79) direct an ignited fuel/air mixture into the afterburner chamber. The afterburner flame is downstream from the flameholder, but under conditions of increased temperature the afterburner flame will tend to migrate upstream toward the flameholder. To avoid this tendency, the flameholder includes means (83,85,95) for channeling through and out of the partitions gas which cools the flameholder metal itself while also decreasing the downstream air temperature, thereby decreasing the potential for flashback. The use of fuel- and oxygen-depleted turbine discharge gas (76) further decreases the tendency toward flashback. Alternatively air diverted from a by-pass duct may be used.

    Abstract: For shear-cutting a stack (10) of thin sheets (11) of amorphous steel along a cutting plane (42) that extends transversely of the stack (10), we utilize apparatus that comprises two blades (12, 14) that are positioned at the start of a cutting operation on opposite sides of the stack (10). Each of the blades (12, 14) has a first surface (30, 36) for engaging one side of the stack (10) and a second surface (32, 38) extending transversely of the first surface (30, 36) and generally parallel to said cutting plane (42) and intersecting the first surface (30, 36) at a corner (34, 40). The first surface (30, 36) of each blade (12, 14) is disposed at a predetermined rake angle ( alpha ) with respect to a reference plane (50) extending through a point on the corner (34, 40) of the blade (12,1 4)and normal to said cutting plane (42). By making the sum of these rake angles of a negative value and between 5 and 35 degrees, we are able to substantially improve the wear resistance of the blades (12, 14) and lengthen their working life.

    Abstract: An improved channel (36) is disclosed utilizing a lesser volume of metal which includes corrugated sides (70) providing reinforcement of the side walls (65, 66, 67, 68) against bulge. The corrugations (70) can protrude toward either the inside or the outside of the channel. An embodiment including thick corner sections (82, 84) is disclosed. These thick corner sections provide fixed supports for thin sides (65, 66, 67, 68) and at the same time improved beam resistance to seismic loading. An embodiment which includes sides with transverse grooves is also disclosed. Another embodiment which includes sides with longitudinal grooves is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A bearing clamping assembly for a gas turbine engine for preventing relative rotation between a first shaft and a shaft bearing assembly race in the event of bearing failure. The clamping assembly is comprised of an axially resilient member disposed near the bearing assembly which applies an axial force to the bearing race to maintain it in position relative to the shaft. The first shaft is secured to a second shaft by an axial clamp. The clamping of the two shafts compresses the resilient member which responds by applying the axial force on the bearing race to maintain the race in position in the event of bearing failure.
