PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coupling point for a modular rotary tool, a tool head and carrier for the modular rotary tool.SOLUTION: The coupling point especially for a modular drilling tool having a carrier 4 and a tool head 2 inserted in the carrier 4 comprises: a fastening pin 22 as a first coupling part; and a pin receptacle 16 as a second coupling part. The coupling parts can be coupled to one another by bidirectional rotation with the formation of an interference fit which acts in the radial direction. The coupling parts 16, 22 respectively include two coupling faces 18A, 18B which lie opposite one another and have contact regions 42 in each of which the interference fit is formed.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a closed impeller with a coated vane.SOLUTION: A closed impeller has a base cover, which has a base interior surface, and a second cover. A vane, which has an inlet distal end and an outlet distal end, is on the base interior surface. The vane has low and high pressure side surfaces each of which has a low or a high pressure midpoint. A hard coating is on the low and the high pressure side surfaces. The hard coating has minimum low and high pressure coating thickness at their respective midpoints. The minimum low, as well as high, pressure coating thickness ranging between about 0.085 and about 0.8 of either one of the maximum outlet coating thickness at the outlet distal end or the maximum inlet coating thickness at the inlet distal end, respectively.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coated cutting insert that has improved ability to be able to withstand mechanical shock and thermal shock.SOLUTION: A chromium-containing coated cemented tungsten carbide cutting insert (10 and 32) comprises a substrate (18 and 34) and a coating (24, 30, 40, 46 and 52). The substrate comprises cobalt of about 10.4 to about 12.7 wt%, and chromium of about 0.2 to about 1.2 wt%.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chip-resistant cutting tap.SOLUTION: A cutting tap includes a body having an axial forward end and an axial rearward end. The body has a threaded body portion with spiral flutes adjacent the axial forward end and a cylindrical shank portion adjacent the axial rearward end. The threaded body portion includes a chamfered fluted section and a constant diameter section. The threads have a chamfer relief extending radially inward from a cutting edge to a heel of a land. The amount of chamfer relief reaches a maximum value at a point between the cutting edge and the heel, and then becomes smaller between the point of maximum relief and the heel of the land to provide a clearance that reduces the propensity of the tap to chip.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotary tool and a cutting head for such a rotary tool.SOLUTION: In order to form a tool connection portion between a carrier (6) and a cutting head (12) in a rotary tool (2), particularly in the case of a drill tool, a connection receiving port (8) having the cross section of a roughly rectangular parallelepiped having a pair of facing clamp segments (22A, 22B) and torque segments (24A, 24B) and a corresponding connection pin (10) are provided in respective cases. At least one of the pair of segments is formed to be diagonally inclined in relation to a rotary axis (4) to form dovetail connection. Not only the prevention of drawing out in an axial direction but also torque transmission and a centering function are achieved by the simple and roughly rectangular parallelepiped shape.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a drilling/reaming (hole-expanding) tool.SOLUTION: The drilling/reaming tool (4) includes a reamer head (10) having: at least one end-side drilling major cutting edge (14); and reaming cutting edges (22) arranged to a circumferential face thereof. A main flute (8) which is wound at a first helix angle (α1) is assigned to the major cutting edge (14), and a reamer flute (24) which is wound at a second helix angle (α2) is assigned to each of a plurality of reaming cutting edges (22). Each reamer flute (24) is merged into the main flute (8) so that reaming chips which are produced by the reaming cutting edges (22) are efficiently guided away. To guide the reaming chips further away, the reaming chips are guided into the main flute (8) when they exit out of the reamer flute (24) during operation. The second helix angle (α2) is set to be larger than the first helix angle (α1), and the reamer flute (24) is opened to the main flute (8).

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting insert that includes: a two-layered cutting tip; and a cutting chip processing structure.SOLUTION: The cutting insert includes the pre-formed two-layered cutting tip covering around a curved cutting corner of the insert. The cutting tip includes an upper layer and a lower layer formed of a material that is relatively harder than the upper layer. The lower layer is formed of a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) material or polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (CBN) material, and the upper layer is formed of a cemented carbide. The cutting insert may further include the cutting chip processing structure that is formed in the cutting tip and includes a plurality of facets formed in both sides of a center line so as to provide cutting chip processing during cutting operation. The cutting chip processing structure can be formed in two steps so as to expose part of the lower layer. The two-layered cutting tip can be brazed to the cutting insert before forming the cutting chip processing structure.

The α' phase contains ytterbium. The α' phase being present in an amount between about 25 wt.% and about 85 wt.% of the two phase composite. The SiAlON material further includes an intergranular phase.
