    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a winter type tire with a tread pattern whose tread bands are especially suitable for traveling on a road covered with snow and/or ice, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: A tire especially designed for traveling on snow-covered road has a tread band 1 in a tread block 3. A first system and a second system of sipes 9 are formed in the block. Individual sipes are slanted in opposite direction in respect to a direction (n) perpendicular to a rolling surface of the treat bands 1. The sipes 9 extend along a curved extension part in recessed form to a grip end 10a with a sharp angle that is indicated by individual flexible parts 10 whose boundary is set by sipes themselves in the block 3. The peripheries of individual blocks 3 are partitioned by crosswise grooves 5 having first sides perpendicular to a rolling surface and second sides extending from the first side to the rolling surface itself, and lengthwise grooves.

SOLUTION: A first glass layer 14 surrounds an inner core 12 and has a refraction index difference Δn2 lower than a maximum refraction index difference Δn1 of the inner core 12. The refraction index difference means a difference of refraction indexes of a given glass layer and a clad 18. A second glass layer 16 surrounds the first glass layer 14 and has a maximum refraction index difference Δn3 above the maximum refraction index difference Δn1 of the inner core 12. The low-loss clad 18 surrounds the second glass layer 16. The refraction index difference Δn2 of the first glass layer 14 is improved by a dopant concentration in the first glass layer 14 so that the refraction index difference Δn2 lower than 10% of the refraction index difference Δn3 of the second glass layer 16 in an absolute value is generated.

SOLUTION: A pump device for coupling a pump beam to an active optical fiber that is constituted so as to have a light signal amplified, optically couples the first part of a pump beam 145 to an active fiber 130 optically, and includes a first optical coupler 150 with an insertion loss of 0.2 dB or less for the light signal and a second photocoupler 160 for receiving the second part of the pump beam from the first coupler 150. The second part of the pump beam is further optically coupled to the active fiber 130, and at least one portion of the second part of the pump beam is supplied to the active fiber 130. At least 70% coupling efficiency can be achieved with respect to the pump beam.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the non-linear distortion of an optical transmission system by rounding the edge part of an optical pulse to be received from the transmitter of the system so that a pulse to be used for modulation can be similar to a Gaussian pulse. SOLUTION: In order to promote the reduction of SPM/GVD distortion from an optical communication link, a transponder 43 is provided with an electric attenuator 44 placed between a photodiode 36 and an amplifier 38. This electric attenuator 44 smoothes the signal pulse of a sharp edge part by attenuating the said signal received by the amplifier 38. Especially, in order not to operate the amplifier 38 in deep saturated state, a predetermined attenuation level is applied to the electric signal received from the photodiode 36. When the electric attenuator 44 is placed in front of the amplifier 38, the electric signal to be inputted to the amplifier 38 is attenuated into power level lower than a power level for operating the amplifier 38 in the deep saturated state.

The device 22 comprises members 34, 36 forming a sleeve 26 adjoining the portion 20 for fitting the cable thereinto and elements 38, 40, 42, 44 forming two closing parts 28, 30 for the sleeve. These closing parts each can engage with the cable at positions longitudinally spaced apart from each other and form a closed area 32 between the closing parts together with the cable and the sleeve. Use of the device 22 keeps outer surfaces of the cable dry over a portion 24 adjoining the portion 20 that may suffer a dry-band arc.

SOLUTION: A tire 1 being large in transversal curvature for motorcycles is equipped with a carcass structure 2 with at least one ply installed with two reinforced cords being almost parallel with each other and oriented in the direction tilted to a tire equatorial plane x-x, a belt structure 10 formed by a radial inner layer installed with a sheet made of an elastomer material, and a radial outer layer installed with plural circumferential coils 14a set up in the axial direction as arranged by the side of a cord 14 wound on the tire equatorial plane x-x at a nearly 0 deg. angle, respectively. This tire 1 is favorably related to such an optimum performance as road behavior, wear regularity, sufficient kilometric yielding and low weight at both cases of a straight traveling road and a curve.
