Abstract:
Process for producing gloss and smoothness on the surface of a paper web (1), comprising: A. advancing a web (1) of papermaking fibers through a nip formed by a smooth metal finishing drum (2) and a resilient backing roll (3, 5) providing a nip pressure on the web (1) of at least 13,780 KN/M (2000 psi); and B. heating the drum (2) to a temperature at least high enough to heat a critical substrata portion of the web (1) to a temperature of at least the dynamic Tg of the fibers to provide an unexpected increase in gloss and surface flatness without excessively densifying the entire sheet.

Abstract:
Disclosed is an improvement to twin wire forming wherein an open support structure in the form of an opened or grilled breast roll or a slotted forming shoe supports at least a portion of the outer wire in the forming throat. In such manner, the gap between the open support structure and the forming cylinder can be narrowed such that the gap is less than or equal to the thickness of the jet of stock injected between the wire to form the web. The jet of stock so injected impinges on both the forming cylinder and the open support structure and immediate drainage is provided through the outer wire without substantially varying the tension or radius of the outer wire thereby generally improving uniformity and, in particular, improving basis weight uniformity of the web produced.
Abstract:
Production of novel pulp, primarily wood pulp, from chips using pre-treatment with stabilizers and alkaline peroxide prior to mechanical fiberization (refining) to increase the brightness of the resulting fibers and the papermaking strength achievable with the fibers. The novel aspect of the pre-treatment prior to refining is that it results in the ''in situ'' formation within the chips of a stabilizing flock or sol.
Abstract:
Modified polysaccharide materials comprising the reaction product of water-wettable polysaccharide with N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide and methods of making same. The materials are useful in the preparation of products characterized by their increased bulk and absorbency.
Abstract:
A method for making a fibrous web and the wiper (71) made thereby which exhibits improved dry, wet and solvent tensile strengths as well as superior resistance to wet collapse. The web is formed from a furnish of lignocellulosic fibers and bi-component fibers, the web having a basis weight in the range of about 20 lbs per ream to about 60 lbs per ream. Bonding material (75) is applied in at least one pattern to each surface of the web, and the web is creped at least twice from a creping surface. Lignocellulosic fibers make up from about 50 % to about 94 % by weight of the web. Bi-component fibers of polyester and polyethylene make up from about 6 % to about 50 % by weight of said fibrous web. The fibrous web has an undulating disposition due to creping and has first and second strong, abrasion resistant, laminate-like surface regions interconnected by an absorbent central de-densified core region containing tack-bonded bi-component fibers.
Abstract:
A manifold (88) for use with a hand held pump spray device (10) allowing the spray head (12) to draw simultaneously from two separate reservoirs (16, 18) containing two different fluids such that the spray head (12) raises a mixture of the two fluids in a predetermined ratio. The manifold (88) includes at least one ball check valve arrangement (82, 116, 120) in the suction line (104) to the chemical concentrate reservoir (18), the ball check valve (116) being normally biased to a closed position. The check valve (116) prevents the pumping of the concentrate when the diluent reservoir (16) is spent and further prevents cross contamination between the two fluids in the two reservoirs (16, 18) due to syphoning.
Abstract:
Paper products such as bathroom tissue, facial tissue, napkins and paper towels are made from recycled newsprint fibers still containing printing ink oils. These products exhibit premium level qualities in terms of softness, bulk, and flexibility. The novel process selectively treats newsprint fibers and contaminants in a way that makes the fibers feel softer and enhances papermachine operation with this type of furnish, thereby permitting higher product quality levels than previously possible with newsprint fibers.
Abstract:
Particulate expandable styrene polymers are coated with a distilled acetylated monoglyceride product to reduce the cooling time of articles molded from such expandable styrene polymers. Coating of the expandable particulate styrene polymer is obtained by contacting the polymer with an emulsion of a distilled acetylated monoglyceride and water with a suitable surfactant. The distilled acetylated monoglyceride is a liquid at room temperature and is substantially completely acetylated.
Abstract:
A conveyor system (10) for flanged containers (24) includes downwardly inclined, laterally-spaced rails (30, 32) for supporting the flanges (25) of the containers (24) as the containers (24) move by gravity toward a take-away conveyor (80). Control elements (36, 38, 40) are provided for permitting each container (24) to move by gravity on the rails into engagement with a leading edge (84)of an adjacent aperture (82) in the take-away conveyor (80) with flanges (25) of each container (24) still supported by a lower section (34) of the spaced rails. Preferably the lower section (34) is movable, and an actuating system (68, 70, 72) is provided for moving it to positively direct a lower trailing end of each container (24) into its adjacent aperture.
