Abstract: 838,634. Television. SOC. NOUVELLE DE L'OUTILLAGE R.B.V. ET DE LA RADIOINDUSTRIE. March 10, 1958 [March 11, 1957], No. 7678/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (3). A switching unit for television channels is arranged to substitute one channel for another for an adjustable predetermined time interval and at an externally controlled time, the switchover operation at the beginning of the interval and the switch-back operation at the termination of the interval each being effected automatically during a frame blanking interval when no picture information occurs. The invention is described as applied to the switching unit described in Specification 806,636 where each of a plurality of channels is associated with a different stage of a counter and a desired channel is selected by a switching circuit which conditions the counter to step to the appropriate stage and stop. The counter is stepped by line synchronizing pulses which are gated during the frame blanking interval and the operation proceeds on a cyclic basis with the counter being reset and re-stepped to select the desired channel during each frame interval. If the counter is conditioned simultaneously at two stages, the counter steps to and stops at the stage which is of lower order. This feature is utilized in carrying out the invention by arranging that the channel which is to be substituted for the predetermined interval is allocated to the first stage of the counter. The procedure then merely involves operating the switching unit in the normal manner as described in Specification 806,636 to select amongst the channels connected to stage 2 and those of higher order, the substitution of the stage 1 channel when desired being effected by conditioning stage 1 for the desired predetermined interval without disturbing the conditioning of the stage for the selected channel. On the next operation of the counter, during the immediately following frame interval, the stage 1 channel is substituted and remains in operation until the termination of the chosen interval when, during the next following frame interval, the counter reverts to the stage for the previously selected channel. The conditioning of the stage involves the closure of a contact and the Specification describes a circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown), which is actuated by a push-button switch and thereafter operates in response to frame synchronizing pulses to energize a relay controlling the contact for the period of either one, two or four frames as determined by the setting of a counter. It is stated that the invention may also be embodied in the switching unit described in Specification 787,425.
