Abstract: 534,015. Cracking and coking oils. STANDARD OIL CO. (INDIANA). July 15, 1939, No. 20656. Convention date, July 16, 1938. [Class 32] In a multi-stage cracking and coking process in which the crude stock is coked without prior cracking, the vapours formed in the cracking are fractionated into fractions of low and high boiling range, the high boiling fraction is cracked and the products obtained recycled to mix with the vapours from the coking zone, and the low boiling fraction is cracked or reformed at high temperatures in a second cracking zone. The crude may be coked directly by passage through a heated coil 31 into a coking drum 33 from which products pass to a fractionating tower 35 and thence to a second tower 54 where the distillate is separated into a light fraction collected in a receiver 63 and a heavier fraction collected at the bottom of the tower 54. This latter fraction is cracked in the first cracking coil 59 and the products re-cycled to a separator 40 at the bottom of the tower 35 so that the vapours from the coking and first cracking operations are intermingled and fractionated together. The light fraction collected in receiver 63 is fed through line 79 as stock for the second cracking stage comprising cracking coil 66, separator 70, and fractionating tower 73, the stock being fed to the tower 73 so that it is mixed with the products of the second cracking stage before being fed through line 77 to the coil 66. In the preferred form shown when the crude stock contains gasoline and like constituents of low boiling range the crude is pre-heated in a coil 13 prior or after passage to a tower 18 where the lighter constituents are removed and used in part as stock for the second cracking coil 66 while the residual constituents are fed through line 46 to the tower 35 so that they are pre-heated and partly vapourised by the vapours from the coking zone before being passed through lines 48, 49, 52 to that zone. The residues from the second separator 70 are returned to the first separator 40.

Abstract: In a vapour phase cracking process in which the oils are passed through coiled tubes heated to 875--950 DEG F. and the products flow into an unobstructed elongated drum 12 maintained full of vapours at cracking temperature, a relatively cool oil is discharged into the vapours as they pass from the drum 12 through a pipe 19 so that all the cooling medium is carried off by the vapours. The latter are discharged into the bottom of the drum 12 through a pipe 13 provided with a conical plate 14 having a curved lip 17 beneath which is mounted a dished plate 15 to prevent contact with tarry residues which are removed through a pipe 34 cooled by an encircling pipe 35 through which cool oil is flowed. This oil is then passed through pipes 31 into a perforated distributer 22 situated in the top of the drum 12 so that it flows over the outside of the jacket 24 surrounding the vapour offtake 19 and also fills the jacket, finally being sprayed through nozzles 30 into the path of the vapours leaving the drum. The furnace for heating the cracking coils may be constructed as described in Specification 407,193.

Abstract: Motor fuel is obtained by cracking in the vapour phase an oil which is completely vaporizable, the oil being rapidly heated to vaporize it at temperatures between 850 and 975 DEG F., and the vapours being maintained at this temperature under a pressure of 100-400 lbs. per square inch for a period of time so that the minimum total yield per pass is between 2.5 and 13 per cent, and not more than 15 per cent of the oil is converted during the rapid heating and at least 85 per cent after such rapid heating. Oil preheated in a coil 23 is passed through a pipe 26 into a fractionating tower 16. A selected condensate is collected in a plate 20 and fed by a pump 29 through vaporising and rapid heatings coils 10, 10 in a furnace 5 and thence through the main cracking coil 11. The cracked products are cooled rapidly by injection through a pipe 14 into a bath of heavy residues maintained at the bottom of the tower 16 and kept cool by circulation through a heater 32 . Vapours passing off from the top of the tower 16 are condensed in a coil 31 to give the desired product. In a modification, Fig. 2, the cracked vapours are passed through a pipe 46 into a large unobstructed reaction chamber 47 where they are maintained under cracking conditions in a quiescent state. The charging stock preheated in coils in a fractionating tower 60 and in a coil in the chamber 47 surrounding the residue outlet 54 is introduced into this chamber through a pipe 52. The vapours pass off through a pipe 51 and mixed with the residues from the chamber 47 are introduced into the tower 60. The final products pass off through a pipe 75 and are condensed in a cooler 76 while a fraction drawn off from a lower plate through a pipe 72 is stripped in a chamber 73 by steam to give a composite pool which is supplied as stock to the cracking coils through pipes 81, 83, the stripped vapours being returned to the tower 60 through a pipe 80.
