    Abstract: Provided herein is a device for wirelessly communicating with hearing assistance devices. According to various embodiments, the device includes a first interface for communicating with a programmer and a second interface for wirelessly communicating with a hearing assistance device. The second interface is adapted to receive a plurality of communication modules. Each of the modules is adapted for communication with at least one specific type of hearing assistance device. The device includes a housing for the first interface, the second interface, and electrical connections between the interfaces. The housing adapted to be worn around the neck of a person wearing the hearing assistance device.

    Abstract: The present subject matter includes method and apparatus for an insulating layer applied to a battery to effectively increase the insulated separation between the anode and cathode contact surfaces of the battery. This increase in effective separation between anode and cathode decreases the probability that moisture applied to the battery will cause substantial ohmic conductivity between the anode and the cathode. Consequently, fewer batteries will be prematurely depleted or destroyed by moisture and fewer devices holding those batteries will need repair. The present subject matter serves to prevent or eliminate discharge of corrosive battery chemicals due to moisture and operating in wet environments. The life of batteries and devices using the present subject matter is thus extended.     Abstract: One aspect relates to a method to block data transmission interference from an input of a receiver in a hearing instrument. In various embodiments, an acoustic-based signal representative of sound received at a microphone system is received. It is determined if a trigger associated with a data transmission has occurred. A signal representative of the acoustic-based signal is presented to the input of the receiver when the trigger has not occurred such that the receiver converts the acoustic-based signal into an output acoustic signal. The signal representative of the acoustic-based signal is blocked from the input of the receiver when the trigger has occurred such that data transmission interference is blocked from being converted into the acoustic signal. In various embodiments, the method further comprises presenting a signal representative of a substitute waveform to the input of the receiver when the trigger has occurred. Other aspects are provided herein.

    Abstract: Ear-level full duplex audio communication systems each include one or two ear attachment devices, such as in-the-ear (ITE) or behind-the-ear (BTE) devices, that wirelessly communicates to a remote device such as a computer, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a cellular phone, a walkie talkie, or a language translator. When used as a hearing aid, such a system allows a hearing impaired individual to communicate with or through the remote device, such as to talk to another person through a cellular phone. When being used as an ear piece wirelessly extended from the remote device, such system allows an individual with normal hearing to privately communicate with or through the remote devi ce without the need of holding the device or wearing any device wired to the remote device. Each ear attachment device includes a voice operated exchange (VOX), housed within the device, to preserve energy and hence, maximize the period between battery replacement or recharges. The VOX also gates various sounds detected by the system to control possible echoes and ringing.

    Abstract: A hearing aid having a battery door seal that substantially reduces or eliminates unwanted air flow from and into a battery compartment is provided . Eliminating unwanted air flow removes a potential source of acoustic feedbac k and provides significant improvement in frequency response of the hearing aid. T he hearing aid includes a battery compartment with sidewalls that have a step joint formed between an opening in a faceplate to the battery compartment and a substantially flat portion of the sidewalls. The battery door has a lip that sets on the step joint when the battery door closes providing an air seal around a substantial portion of the battery compartment. A thin slit is provided between the faceplate and the battery door behind the end of the battery door, where the battery door is connected to the faceplate by a hinge to provide appropriate air flow for proper battery operation.
