Abstract: Method and apparatus for external cavity laser absorption spectroscopy There is disclosed an apparatus, and corresponding methods, for determining one or more characteristics of a sample in an absorption cell using laser absorption spectroscopy. For example, the characteristic may be concentration of a species in the sample. The apparatus comprises an external cavity semiconductor laser comprising a semiconductor gain medium within an optical resonator. The absorption cell is located within the optical resonator of the external cavity semiconductor laser so as to be optically coupled with the gain medium. A controller is arranged to provide a varied injection current to the semiconductor gain medium. A photodetector is arranged to detect laser light output by the external cavity semiconductor laser. An analyzer is arranged to determine one or more characteristics of the sample from behavior of the detected laser light output as a function of the varied injection current.

Abstract: A multipole magnet for deflecting a beam of charged particles, comprising a plurality of ferromagnetic poles arranged in a pole plane, and a plurality of permanent magnets arranged to supply magnetomotive force to at least one of the plurality of ferromagnetic poles to produce a magnetic field along the pole plane in a beamline space between the poles. The multipole magnet further comprises a plurality of ferromagnetic flux conducting members arranged to channel magnetic flux from at least one of the plurality of permanent magnets. At least one of the plurality of permanent magnets and the plurality of ferromagnetic flux conducting members is moveable in the pole plane relative to the plurality of ferromagnetic poles so as to vary the strength of the magnetic field in the beamline space. The multipole magnet is a quadrupole magnet comprising four ferromagnetic poles and two permanent magnets, wherein each of the two permanent magnets is associated with two of the poles to supply magnetomotive force thereto.

Abstract: The band 30 moves about a roller 20 within an immersion bath 40 and a 2nd roller 10. An electrostatic field is established between the second roller 10 and a counter electrode. The fibres are preferably removed by means of airflow. The preferred apparatus also includes means for cleaning the belt 30, and depositing biological or charged material. The apparatus can be used for electrospinning of nanofibres 50 or the production of charged droplets.
