    Abstract: An electronic infrared thermometer is disclosed comprising a housing forming an interior chamber, a pyroelectric sensor mounted within the chamber for sensing temperature change and generating an indicative electrical signal, means for directing infrared radiation from the object to be measured to the pyroelectric sensor, a shutter assembly for controlling the passing of infrared radiation to the pyroelectric sensor, an ambient temperature sensor for sensing ambient temperature within the interior chamber and generating an electrical signal indicative thereof, an electrical circuit for processing the electrical signals to calculate the temperature of the object to be measured, and an indicator for indicating the calculated temperature. The process for measuring the temperature of an object is also disclosed comprising shielding the pyroelectric sensor from infrared radiation from exterior to the thermometer housing, selectively exposing the pyroelectric sensor to infrared radiation substantially solely from the object to be measured to generate a first electrical signal related to the absolute temperature of the object to be measured, sensing the ambient temperature of the pyroelectric sensor and generating a second electrical signal proportional thereto, and electrically processing the first and second electrical signals to calculate the temperature of the object to be measured.

    Abstract: An application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for use with an IR thermometer includes a voltage regulator, a power on reset, a current reference, a voltage reference, a bias voltage generator (resistor divider), a constant current source, an ambient sensor amplifier, a pyroelectric sensor amplifier, an analog multiplexer, and an analog to digital converter. A microprocessor is interconnected with the ASIC to process the electrical signals from the ASIC in order to calculate the absolute temperature of the object being measured. The electrical signals provided by the ASIC correspond to a signal generated by the pyroelectric sensor indicative of the temperature of the object being measured and a signal generated by the ambient temperature sensor indicative of the ambient temperature of the pyroelectric sensor.

    Abstract: A first protective cover (8) for the probe (2) of an infrared thermometer (1) comprises a thin sidewall (31) linked to a film window (10) by a collar structure (34). The collar structure (34) includes one or more of a sill (14), first fold (12) and second fold (16) that receive any forces applied to the sidewall (31) so as to prevent the translation of these forces into a stretching force applied against the window (10). A second protective cover (8) comprises a sidewall (31) between a window (10) and a cover retention rim (71) to retain the cover (8) with the window (10) positioned over the opening of probe (2). The cover retention rim (71) provides points of contact at two separate planar locations (90, 91) on the rim (71) with the probe (2) so as to form a snug fit that precludes vertical movement of the cover (8) after the cover (8) is installed on the probe (2).
