Accordingly, the physical geometry of a header area is uniform so that a decrease in the quantity of light reflected from the optical recording medium can be prevented when data is recorded to the recording medium.

PURPOSE: A device and a method for distinguishing a sort of an optical disc are provided to shorten a time needed for distinguishing the sort of the optical disc by using a value of each light receiving part for receiving the light from the light sources turned on/off sequentially or at once. CONSTITUTION: An optical pickup(140) includes the light sources(141) of the different wavelengths and the light receiving parts(143) outputting an output signal by respectively receiving the light irradiated from the light sources. The first switch(130) makes the light sources sequentially irradiate the light to the optical disc for a predetermined time by switching the light sources. A switch controller(120) controls the first switch. The second switch(150) makes the light receiving parts output the output signals sequentially and repeatedly for the predetermined time. A signal processor(160) processes/outputs the output signals inputted from the second switch. A controller(110) distinguishes the sort of the optical disc depending on a time interval between the signal reflected from a surface of the optical disc and the signal reflected from a data recording layer.

PURPOSE: An optical pick-up unit is provided to quantitatively detect change in thickness of a recording medium and compensate a spherical aberration due to the thickness change of the recording medium. CONSTITUTION: A light source(51) generates and emits an optical beam. An objective lens(57) focuses the optical beam incident from the light source at an optical spot on a recording medium(50). A beam splitter(55) convert a proceeding path of the incident optical beam. A detecting unit(65) divides the optical beam reflected from the recording medium and passing through the objective lens into a plurality of optical areas for detection. A signal processor(70) detects a thickness signal of the recording medium by using detecting signals output from the detecting unit.

CONSTITUTION: An optical detection element(204) detects an optical signal reflected from an optical recording media by a multi division. A detector(226) detects combined outputs in a same track direction of the optical detection element(204), combined outputs in a same semidiameter direction, and combined outputs in a diagonal line direction. A control unit detects a data condition recorded on the optical recording media, an interference between data and various system states, and supplies a selecting control signal and a compensation signal on the basis of a detected result. A compensator selects partial outputs of the optical detection element(204) supplied through the detector(226) according to the selecting control signal, and adaptively compensates the partial outputs of the selected optical detection element(204) according to the compensation signal.

CONSTITUTION: A first electrode (110) detects a current which is generated by the electric force of an electrified toner that forms registration test patterns as registration test patterns for multiple colors which are formed on a transfer medium of an imaging device approach a color registration sensor (100). A first voltage generation unit (120) generates a first voltage signal corresponding to a first voltage signal by converting the current. A signal processing unit (130) detects a registration test position of each color by using the first voltage signal.
