Abstract: An apparatus and a method for processing a digital image are provided to multiply the pixel of an edge having an angle or a size, at which jagging artifact is frequently generated, by a relatively small gain, thereby reducing the jagging artifact and obtaining edge emphasis effects. An image processing apparatus comprises a detection unit(420) and an edge emphasis unit(450). The detection unit detects the directivity of an edge of an input image signal or the size of the edge. The edge emphasis unit determines the intensity of the edge and emphasizes the edge of the input image signal according to the determined intensity of the edge on the basis of the detected directivity of the edge and the size of the edge. The edge emphasis unit comprises a filtering unit(410) and a gain control unit(430), and the filtering unit filters the input image signal. The gain control unit controls gain to be multiplied to the input image signal filtered in the filtering unit on the basis of the detected directivity of the edge and the size of the edge.
