Abstract: A need exists for sophisticated special video effects that can be developed through an interactive operator interface with a reasonable level of complexity. Construction of an effect becomes inordinately difficult if a large number of tedious commands are required or if it is difficult to predict the effect of a given operator command on a transformation that is being developed. To solve those type problems, the instant video special effects system (10) includes at least one signal system (12) operating in real time to transform one or more input video signals (14, 16, 18) to generate an output video (11, 13) as well as an intercommunicating work station (26), an operator control panel (32) and a control system (28). Control surfaces defined by one or two control curves are developed at the work station (26) and are used by the control system (28) to define a video effect in which portions of the input video images are selectively mapped to the control surfaces and manipulated to define an output video image. The control system operates to define each parameter controlling the output image at selected event times and to individually interpolate each parameter between the event times at which the parameter is defined. The signal systems generate the output images in response to input images and the instantaneous values of control parameters defined by the control system.
