Abstract: This application relates to a case for a portable electronic device. The case includes a magnetic boosting device, carried in a cover of the case. The magnetic boosting device includes a layer of magnetic elements including: (i) a primary magnetic element, and (ii) a secondary magnetic element. The primary magnetic element, characterized by having magnetic poles that are aligned perpendicular to the plane of the cover, provides a first magnetic field. The secondary magnetic element, characterized by having magnetic poles that are aligned parallel to the plane of the cover, provides a second magnetic field. The first magnetic field and the second magnetic field contribute to a resultant magnetic field that is asymmetrically disposed about the plane of the cover. The electronic device can include a sensor and a controller for placing the electronic device in a power saving mode when the cover is in a closed position.

Abstract: This application relates to devices that utilize magnets and associated magnetic sensors. A magnetic sensor can be positioned and oriented with respect to a magnetic element such that the magnetic sensor is capable of detecting a horizontal magnetic field component in contrast to the conventional paradigm of detecting a vertical magnetic field component. This can be accomplished by orienting a magnetically sensitive surface of the magnetic sensor about ninety degrees with respect to a magnetic vector of the magnetic element.

Abstract: An accessory to device coupling system can include a first magnet array adapted for assembly with respect to a surface of an electronic device and a second magnet array adapted for assembly with respect to a surface of an accessory device, the accessory device configured to interact electrically with the electronic device. The first magnet array can include a first plurality of magnets arranged in a first pattern of alternating polarities, and the second magnet array can include a second plurality of magnets arranged in a second pattern of alternating polarities that corresponds to the first pattern of alternating polarities. The corresponding alternating polarity patterns can cause the second magnet array to couple to the first magnet array with a normalized attraction force only at an intended orientation and alignment, and with less than half of the normalized attraction force at any other orientation and alignment.

Abstract: This application relates to improving kinematics in a computing device such as a laptop computer. A magnetic latch mechanism includes a magnetic array and an attractor plate. The magnetic array is secured in a top portion of the laptop computer and the attractor plate is secured in a base portion of the laptop computer. An attractive force of the magnetic latch mechanism is calibrated by selectively demagnetizing a portion of one or more magnetic elements in the magnetic array to reduce the attractive force proximate a target force. The calibration technique can include exciting a demagnetizing element, such as a pair of conductive coils, with a short, high frequency demagnetization pulse to create a demagnetized zone within the magnetic array that is completely demagnetized, irrespective of unit to unit variations of magnetic properties in the initially magnetized magnetic array. This technique ensures an accurate kinematic user experience.

Abstract: Connectors that have a low profile, can form strong and reliable connections despite connection alignment errors, and can be readily manufactured. One example can provide a connector receptacle having a magnetic array arranged to provide a strong attachment that allows the use of a low profile connector receptacle and connector insert. The magnetic array can include magnets and magnetic elements, where the magnetic elements can be magnetically conductive pole-pieces. Each pole piece can have magnets at two of its sides. Another example can provide contacts for a connector insert that can have more than one contacting surface to connect to a contact of a connector receptacle.

Abstract: An enclosure may be provided with a housing. The housing may have an opening that separates and joins along a seam. A magnetic closure may have a pair of mating flexible magnetic members such as flexible rings or strips that run along the seam. Magnetic-field shunts may be provided in the flexible magnetic members. Multiple magnetic elements may be formed along the length of each magnetic member to form a multipole permanent magnet. Magnetic attraction may be varied along the lengths of the magnetic members and may be varied as a function of the separation between opposing magnet members. A magnetic clasp may be provided on the housing. The magnetic clasp may have attracting magnets to help close the opening in the housing. Protruding clasp portions may be formed from flexible material and may have embedded magnets configured to repel each other to facilitate use of the clasp.

Abstract: Embodiments describe a receiving element that includes a ferromagnetic structure axially symmetrical around a central axis disposed along a length of the ferromagnetic structure. The ferromagnetic structure includes a groove region defining two end regions on opposing sides of the groove region, where the groove region has a smaller length than the two end regions. The receiving element also includes an inductor coil wound about the groove region of the ferromagnetic structure and in between the two end regions.

Abstract: Electronic devices and accessory devices for electronic devices are described. In some instances, an accessory device includes a keyboard and a cover rotatable with respect to the keyboard. In some instances, an accessory device includes a back panel and a foldable cover rotatable with respect to the back panel. These accessory devices may include several magnetic elements designed to magnetically couple with, and retain, an electronic device without any additional mechanical or other interlocking devices. In this regard, the magnetic elements in the accessory devices provide an external magnetic field sufficiently strong enough to retain the electronic device, and can counter gravitational forces and/or the weight of the electronic device. However, some accessory devices include additional magnetic elements that provide an external magnetic field that repels magnetic elements in the electronic device. Also, the magnetic elements may also be used to hold different sections of the accessory device together.
