Abstract: A moulding material which is capable of being shaped and cured by press moulding in the temperature range 70 DEG to 250 DEG C. contains (1) at least one filler and/or reinforcing material (I); (2) at least one polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated polyester having a molecular weight of from 750 to 3000 and a softening point within the range 35 DEG to 250 DEG C. (II); (3) at least one organic peroxide having a decomposition point with the range 50 DEG to 250 DEG C. (III); (4) di - methallyl - terephthalate (IV); and optionally (5) one or more polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated monomeric compounds (V) other than di-methallyl-terephthalate; in the weight ratios of (I): (II + III + IV + V) of from 0.1 to 4, (II): (IV + V) of from 0.2 to 9, (III): (II + IV + V) of from 0.005 to 0.09, and (V): (IV) of less than 1. Lists of components I, II, III, and V are given and conventional additives may also be added to the moulding material. In the examples: (1) A polyester formed from maleic acid and propane-diol-1,2 is copolymerized with di - methallyl - terephthalate using dibenzoyl peroxide in dibutyl phthalate, there being present asbestos powder and optionally glass fibre cuttings having a length of 13 mm.; (2) a polyester formed from isophthalic and maleic acids and propane-diol-1,2 is copolymerized with dimethallyl-terephthalate and diallyl phthalate in the presence of chalk; (3) the polyester of Example (2) is copolymerized with di-methallyl-terephthalate using tertiary-butyl perbenzoate and the mixture is used to impregnate glass fibre fabric.

Abstract: A catalyst for use in converting N-formyl amines to the corresponding nitriles is prepared by treating a silica gel containing 90% of pores with a radius ranging between 10 and 200 , the mean pore radius being 48,9 , and having an internal surface of 314 square metres per gram and an exchange acidity of between pH 5 and 6,6, with an alcoholic solution of titanium tetrachloride, allowing to stand in air for 15 minutes, treating with water and finally heating in a current of ammonia for 10 hours at 300 DEG C. Specification 263,198 is referred to.ALSO:Nitriles are prepared by reacting an N-formylated primary amino compound at 400 DEG to 600 DEG C in the gas phase on a catalyst of silicic acid gel or a silicate, said materials having more than 50% of pores with a radius ranging from 10 to 200 , a mean pore radius of 20 to 100 and an internal surface of less than 550 square metres per gram. The catalyst preferably additionally contains an oxide of a metal of one of the Group III to VI of the Periodic System and may be regenerated by heating to between 400 and 750 DEG C. in a current of oxygen or oxygen-containing gas, followed, if desired, by treatment with a dilute acid. The N-formylated amine reactant may be prepared from the appropriate amine and formic acid or an ester thereof in a zone of elevated temperature preceding the catalyst zone. Starting materials may be aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic in nature and may be further substituted by methoxy, chloro and nitrile substituents, as well as containing more than one formylamino group. The examples describe the preparation of benzonitrile, ortho-and para-tolunitriles, ortho-chlorobenzonitrile (saponified to ortho-chlorobenzoic acid), alpha - naphthonitrile, hexahydrobenzonitrile, benzyl cyanide, acetonitrile, suberic acid dinitrile, amino-oenanthic nitrile, sebacic acid dinitrile and omega-amino-pelargonic nitrile. Specification 263,198 is referred to.

Abstract: Comminuted polyamide is mixed with 0,5 to 10% of a compound H2NOL-COOR; R being hydrogen, aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or an aromatic radical, and heated above the softening point, but below the decomposition point, of the polamide, but to at least 250 DEG C. to give an expanded product. The polyamide may be linear or crosslinked e.g. by irradiation, by heating with formaldehyde, or by polyfunctional compounds, The mixture of hydroxy alkyl diamine and ester of Specification 858,105 may also be present, and the polyamide formers are the same as in that Specification.ALSO:Comminuted polyamide is mixed with 0,5 to 10% of a compound H2Nlc COO R; R being hydrogen an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or an aromatic radicle, and heated above the softening point, but below the decomposition point, of the polyamide, but to at least 250 DEG C., to give an expanded product. The polyamide may be linear or cross linked, e.g. by irradiation, or by polyfractional compounds. The mixture of hydroxy alkyl diamine and esters of Specification 858,105 may also be present.
