Abstract: Aromatic hydrocarbons are separated from paraffins by solvent extraction employing as selective solvent a N-hydroxyalkyl pyrrolidone and recovering the aromatics from the solvent. The alkyl group may contain 1-6 carbon atoms; N-hydroxyethyl pyrrolidone is preferred. The solvent may contain 5-25% by volume of water based on the pyrrolidone and separation is effected continuously or batchwise at 5-60 DEG C. preferably with vibration; a second parafinic solvent may be used.
