Abstract: Terephthalic acid is produced by thermal rearrangement of alkali metal or thallium salts of other monocyclic aromatic carboxylic acids, in which process the initial reactant in the form of a dry fine powder is compressed into a compact gas-free mass in an elongated zone, the compression being sufficient to convey the compact mass through the zone, and the compact mass is intermittently ejected directly into a separate reaction zone for thermal rearrangement. The compression zone may taper into a reaction zone, e.g. of smaller diameter. Specifications 815,180, 816,248 and 840,040 are referred to.
