Abstract: The invention relates to a device for storing electrical energy (1), comprising an electrochemical cell (56) having a cathode chamber (65) for holding a liquid cathode material and an anode chamber (57) for holding a liquid anode material, wherein the cathode chamber (65) and the anode chamber (57) are separated by a solid electrolyte (3), wherein the solid electrolyte (3) is surrounded by a planar construction (51) having openings, through which the cathode material can flow, wherein the planar construction is made of an electrically conductive material, and wherein the cathode chamber (65) comprises at least one segment (63), wherein each segment (63) has a jacket (53) composed of an electrically conductive material and the jacket (53) is fastened to the planar construction (51) having openings in a fluid-tight and electrically conductive manner and wherein each segment is filled with a porous felt (55) or a porous material different from porous felt. The invention further relates to a method for assembling and starting up the device and to a method for operating the device.

Abstract: The invention relates to an electrode unit for an electrochemical device, comprising (i) a solid electrolyte, which separates a space for molten cathode material selected from the group consisting of elemental sulfur and polysulfide of the alkali metal anode material and a space for molten alkali metal anode material, and (ii) a porous solid electrode, which is located in the space for the cathode material directly adjacent to the solid electrolyte. Situated between the solid electrode and the solid electrolyte is a non-electron-conducting intermediate layer S, characterized in that prior to the first charging of the electrochemical device, said intermediate layer S is completely saturated with a polysulfide composition containing (A) clean polysulfide met where met = alkali metal of the alkali metal anode material selected from lithium, sodium, potassium, and x is a function of the alkali metal, and for Na = 2, 3, 4, or 5, and for Li = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and for K = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or (B) mixtures of the polysulphides of one and the same alkali metal from (A) between each other.

Abstract: Electrode unit for an electrochemical device, comprising a solid electrolyte (3) and a porous electrode (7), wherein the solid electrolyte (3) separates a space for cathode material and a space for anode material and the porous electrode (7) is connected in surface-area contact to the solid electrolyte (3), wherein a displacer (23) is accommodated in the space for anode material, wherein the displacer (23) is produced from a high-grade steel or from graphite foil and comes to lie against the inner geometry of the solid electrolyte (3) in a resilient manner such that the displacer (23) does not contact the solid electrolyte over the full surface area, or wherein the displacer comprises an outer shell (62) made of high-grade steel or graphite and a core (64) made of a nonferrous metal, wherein the nonferrous metal is thermoplastically deformable at a temperature that is lower than the temperature at which the high-grade steel is thermoplastically deformable, and wherein, for production, the high-grade steel or graphite shell (62) is pressed against the solid electrolyte (3) by introducing and heating the nonferrous metal and, during cooling down, a gap forms between the solid electrolyte (3) and the high-grade steel shell (62).
