Abstract: A drip chamber for an infusion tube, including: a first end (106) including a drip tube (108); a second end (110) including an exit port (112); and a wall (114) connecting the first and second ends and including an interior surface (116) with a hydrophobic portion (118). The drip chamber includes a space (122) enclosed by the interior wall and the first and second ends. The hydrophobic portion (118) of the interior surface repels liquid contacting the hydrophobic coating. The hydrophobic portion of the interior surface enables light to refract through the hydrophobic portion and the wall in the same manner as is the case when the hydrophobic portion is not present on the interior surface.

Abstract: Disclosed is an infusion pump (100) for controlling a flow condition of a source of fluid (106) and delivered to a user through an output tubing (108). The pump comprises a computer processor (102), a first actuator (118), a second actuator (126) and an outlet valve (116). The first actuator (118) is configured for displacing at least one finger for compressing a first portion of the output tubing (108) to deliver the source of fluid (106) to the user. The second actuator (126) is configured for selectively operating an inlet valve of the infusion pump (100) to control the flow condition of the source of fluid (106) to the first portion of the output tubing (108). The outlet valve (116) is disposed downstream of the first portion of the output tubing (108), and the output tubing (108) includes a second portion between the inlet and outlet valve (116). The outlet valve (116) is controlled by the first actuator (118). The first actuator (118) controls the displacement of the at least one finger and the operation of the outlet valve (116) independently from the inlet valve. The second actuator (126) controls the operation of the inlet valve independently from the at least one finger.

Abstract: A medication delivery system (20) having features of the present invention comprises a medical container (26) holding a prescribed medication (27) to be delivered to a patient, a tag 24 adapted to be worn by the patient, a handheld computing device (22), and an electronic medication delivery device (30). Data on the medication (27) is contained in a first label (28) on the medication container (27). The first label (28) also contains the instruction on how the medication is delivered to the patient, including the appropriate settings for an electronic medication delivery device for delivering the medication to the patient. Patient data is contained in a second label (29) on the tag (24) worn by the patient. The medication data, medication delivery instruction, and patient data are provided in machine readable formats. The handheld computing device (22) reads the medication data and the medication delivery instruction on the medication container (26) and the patient data on the patient tag (24). The handheld computing device (22) stores the information obtained and performs a matching check to confirm that the medication data matches with tthe patient data. Upon a confirmed match, it transmits the medication delivery instruction to the electronic medication delivery device (30), which downloads the instruction, prorams the delivery device 30, and prompts an operator to begin delivering the medication (27) to the patient according to the downloaded instruction.
