Abstract: A system and method for providing medical treatment, such as medication, to a patient. The administration of the medication may include the use of an infusion pump. The system may be implemented in a variety of ways including as a computer program. The computer program accessing information related to the identity of a clinician, the identity of a patient, the identity of a medical treatment, and the identity of a medical device. The computer program determines whether the medical treatment has been previously associated with the patient and whether a plurality of operating parameters for the medical device are consistent with the medical treatment. The computer program also includes logic for providing a first error signal if the medical treatment has not been previously identified with the patient; and a second error signal if the operating parameters for the medical device are not consistent with the medical treatment.

Abstract: Disclosed is a system and method for assisting in verifying that the right medication is efficiently provided to the right patient, in the right dose, at the right time, and via the right route. The system may be employed for administering an infusion order (702) including a first administration, a medication, and a flow rate. The system includes first, second, and third computers. First computer is designed to receive data identifying the order (702). Second computer provides instructions for preparing the first administration and provides a first schedule for preparation of additional administrations if additional administrations are included in the order. Thi rd computer provides instructions for the first administration and provides an initiation signal indicating the initiation of the first administration to t he patient. Third computer also provides a flow rate modification signal. The modification signal causes the system to determine whether to generate a second schedule. The second computer provides the second schedule.

Abstract: Devices, systems, and methods for monitoring patient hemodynamic status, systemic vascular resistance, reversal of cardiac and respiratory rates, and patient respiratory volume or effort are disclosed. A peripheral venous pressure is measured and used to detect levels, changes, or problems relating to patient blood volume. The peripheral venous pressure measurement is transformed from the time domain to the frequency domain for analysis. A heart rate frequency is identified, and harmonics of the heart rate frequency are detected and evaluated to determine, among other things, hypovolemia or hypervolemia, systemic vascular resistance, and of cardiac and respiratory rates, and patient respiratory volume or effort.

Abstract: Método para verificar que un tratamiento médico que se ha de administrar a un paciente es correcto, que incluye el uso de un sistema que comprende un primer ordenador y un segundo ordenador e incluye los pasos consistentes en: acceder a información relativa a la identidad del paciente en el segundo ordenador en un lugar remoto, siendo dicho lugar remoto cualquier lugar en el que el paciente esté recibiendo tratamiento; acceder a información referente a la identidad del tratamiento médico en el segundo ordenador, teniendo el tratamiento médico un tipo de tratamiento; determinar si el tratamiento médico ha sido previamente asociado con el paciente; suministrar una primera señal de error si el tratamiento médico no ha sido previamente asociado con el paciente; acceder a información relativa a la identidad de un dispositivo médico en el segundo ordenador, estando configurado el dispositivo médico para administrar dicho tipo de tratamiento médico; determinar si múltiples parámetros de funcionamiento, incluyendo un caudal para el dispositivo médico, son coherentes con el tratamiento médico, habiendo sido suministrados los parámetros de funcionamiento desde el primer ordenador en un lugar central, siendo dicho lugar central cualquier lugar diferente al lugar remoto en el que están accesibles los parámetros para el funcionamiento del dispositivo médico y habiendo sido suministrados los parámetros de funcionamiento al dispositivo médico sin pasar por el segundo ordenador; y suministrar una segunda señal de error si los parámetros de funcionamiento para el dispositivo médico no son coherentes con el tratamiento médico; posibilitar que una enfermera o un clínico ajuste el caudal dentro de una tolerancia de ajuste de caudal designada asociada con una medicación suministrada por el dispositivo médico, teniendo almacenado el sistema una indicación predefinida referente a si la enfermera o el clínico tiene autorización para invalidar la tolerancia de ajuste de caudal; y si la enfermera o el clínico tiene autorización para invalidar la tolerancia de ajuste de caudal, posibilitar que la enfermera o el clínico invalide la tolerancia de ajuste de caudal.

Central computer (108) authorizes the second flow rate if the second flow rate is withing the first flow rate tolerance. An infusion pump (120) receives new operating parameters to implement the second flow rate if the central computer (108) authorizes the second flow rate and the central computer (108) documents initiation of the second flow rate using a time source.

The system sends operating parameters to the medical device after providing various checks to assure that the correct medication is being administered to the correct patient. The system includes features for confirming the operating parameters are still valid and features for sending alarms to the treatment location if there are discrepancies between the operating parameters, medication identifiers, and/or patient identifiers.
