    Abstract: 1481451 Measuring the mass and distribution of particles BLOCK ENG Inc 16 Sept 1974 [23 Oct 1973] 40233/74 Heading G1A In an apparatus for measuring the mass and distribution of particles, e.g. viruses, in a sample 20 that may be treated chemically so that they fluoresce, the light emanating from the particles after they have been subjected to radiation from a laser source 22 is received by a photo-multiplier 30. The light reaching the photo-multiplier passes through a spatial filter 38, e.g. a lire screen, microscope type viewing optics 24 and a filter 26 which is restricted to the fluorescent wavelengths. The detector's output is passed via a D.C. filter 32 and a R.M.S. converter 34 to provide steady state signals representative of "T", the average total D.C. signal in the detector output, and "R", the root mean square value of the oscillations in the detector output. These signals are then processed as shown to supply two display devices representing the statistical particle distribution N=T 2 /(R 2 -T), or the mass M of the dye bound to each particle M = (R 2 -T)/KT. An alternative similiar digital signal processing system Fig. 2 (not shown), is disclosed.

    Abstract: Free floating viruses are detected and sized by a method which combines fluorescent staining with the observation of a modulation of the fluorescence intensity by Brownian motion of the particles in combination with a spatial filter. Intensity modulation and fluorescence data provides a set of descriptors useful in distinguishing the type of virus involved, particularly if also combined with data regarding the scattering of light by the particles. The method and apparatus are also usable in connection with detection and classification of other biological particles having the same order of magnitude of size as viruses.

    Abstract: An improved high resolution chromatograph device operable at column pressures ranging between one and fifty atmospheres absolute measured at the column exit, means for closely regulating the column carrier gas velocity including intermittent stop flow operation, and sample collection chamber means to facilitate contamination free handling and concentration of collected pure sample during spectral or other analysis of eluted samples. Velocity and stop flow control without loss of chromatographic resolution permits matching operation time of chromatograph to that of spectral or other analysis devices.

    Abstract: Dye loading in specific antibody fluorescence is enhanced by grouping dye molecules on a carrier backbone polymer having reactive sites along its length and a reactive end site and bonding the end site to the antibody to be dye tagged. The reactive end site of the carrier molecule is chemically protected while bonding dye molecules along the length of the carrier molecule and the chemical protection is stripped in preparation for antibody tagging.
