    Abstract: A clock comprises a liquid display panel (40) having at least either a clock display part (40a) or a calendar display part (40b), a TN liquid crystal device having a pair of transparent substrates provided with respective transparent electrodes and a nematic liquid crystal about 90° twist-aligned and sealed in the space between the substrates, a first polarizing plate disposed on the viewed side of the TN liquid crystal device, a second polarizing plate, a circular polarization phase plate, a cholesteric liquid crystal polymer sheet, a semitransparent light absorbing member, and a backlight. The second polarizing plate, the circular polarization phase plate, the cholesteric liquid crystal polymer sheet, the semitransparent light absorbing member, and the backlight are arranged on the opposite side to the viewed side in order of mention. When the backlight is operated, the time display or calender display is possible even at night. Further, colorful metallic display is possible.

    Abstract: A liquid crystal display comprising an absorption polarizer disposed on the viewed side of a liquid crystal cell and a reflection polarizer disposed on the opposite side. The liquid crystal cell holds a liquid crystal between two transparent substrates each provided with an electrode on the opposite inner surface thereof. The absorption polarizer is a polarizing sheet absorbing a linearly polarized light having a plane of vibration perpendicular to the axis of easy transmission, whereas the reflection polarizer is a polarizing sheet reflecting the linearly polarized light. A reflector or a color filter is preferably disposed under the reflection polarizer, and a light diffusion layer or a light diffusion plate is preferably disposed on the viewed side of the absorption polarizer.
