Abstract: 1,028,834. Recording tracks of particles. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. June 2, 1964 [June 11, 1963], No. 22816/64. Heading G6P. In a device for indicating the distribution of a radio-active emitter over a given surface, a spark is formed at each point where radiation is incident on the indicator. The device consists of a vessel containing a low-pressure gas and a D.C. energized cathode and anode. A radiation particle enters the vessel, passing through the cathode, and causes electron multiplication in the gas. The D.C. voltage is so chosen that no spark is formed at this stage. An external circuit detects the electron pulse at the anode and causes an impulsive negative potential to be applied to the cathode, thus forming a spark at the point of impact of the radiation on the cathode. The metal cathode may be replaced by a scintillator and a photocathode.

Abstract: 1286895 Recording tracks of particles COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 21 Oct 1970 [30 Oct 1969] 49876/70 Heading G6P In a spark chamber, for determining the image of radio-active sources, as described in the Specification 1,133,682, the dead time of the chamber is reduced by the provision of two electrically conductive coatings on opposite faces of the anode. The spark chamber, 1, has a short-circuiting device, 8, connected across the grid-anodes multiplication spaces but in addition, the anode, 5, consists of a glass plate provided with two coatings, 10, 11 of tin oxide. Coating 11, which is of higher conductivity than, and is electrically connected to, 10, responds rapidly to voltage falls at 8 and by a capacitive effect, reduces the voltage of 10 to quench the spark with a reduced dead time.

Abstract: 1,159,609. Detecting radiation. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 16 Nov., 1966 [27 Nov., 1965], No. 51368/66. Heading H5R. A gas-filled radiation detector is operated so that instead of an incident particle or photon of radiation producing a spark, the voltage between the electrodes is reduced to a level such that the incident photon produces an avalanche of electrons without the spark, and the slight luminosity of these phenomena are intensified via a standard photo - electric image intensifier, and the resulting image recorded, e.g. with a photographic camera. In a preferred embodiment (Fig. 2) a radioactive source 16 shielded by a plate 18 is placed in front of a detector A which consists of a sealed chamber containing a thin metallic cathode 6, e.g. a strip of Al foil, an auxiliary electrode 12, in the form of a metallic grid, and a transparent anode 14 having a conductive surface, e.g. a mesh or a conductive glass, all these electrodes being parallel to each other, the chamber being gas-filled, e.g. with a mixture of xenon and methylol having partial pressures of 730 and 30 torr respectively. The cathode 6 is supported by a metal plate 10, having perforations which effectively collimate the beam from source 16, and the chamber has a transparent top closure so the interior is visible. The cathode and plate 10 are at ground potential, whilst auxiliary electrode 12 and anode 14 are respectively coupled to a low voltage source and a high voltage source B.T. and H.T. through resistors 20 and 22. A photon from source 16 incident on cathode 6 gives rise to electrons which pass through grid 12 to initiate avalanche phenomena in the gap, given a suitable potential. The slight luminosity of these phenomena is amplified in an image intensifier being focused on the photo-cathode thereof by lens 30. The resulting intense image on screen 32 may be photographed with camera 24.

Abstract: 1,089,018. Ionization chambers. COMMIS - SARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. April 13, 1965 [April 17, 1964], No. 15758/65. Head. ing H1D. A nuclear particle detector for # particles and γ-ray or X-ray photons comprises parallel anode 30, mesh grid 28 and cathode 6 electrodes disposed in a gas-filled chamber and connected to supplies such that the anode-grid p.d. is slightly below the disruptive voltage and the grid-cathode p.d. and grid mesh size are such that only a negligible proportion of electrons is collected by the grid. The cathode 6 may comprise an alloy strip 8 lined with aluminium or gold foil 10 and supported by a plate 12 provided with colliminating passages 14. The cathode 6 and a glass plate 4, through which sparks initiated by electrons in the anode-grid gap may be photographed, are sealed to a cylindrical glass wall 2 by indium seals 16 and 18. The gas filling, e.g. 90% argon and 10% methane or xenon at atmospheric or higher pressure, may be changed by way of an orifice 26.
