Abstract: In the present invention, the implementation of a protocol that embeds packets is made sensitive to the type of data being embedded, so that adjustable parameters can be set automatically at the layer providing the parameters being adjusted in accordance with the packets being embedded. Thus it is taken into account that the data in packets being received from a higher layer in order to be encapsulated or segmented and sent further (either directly into the link or on to lower layer), may be classified into different categories with respect to the adjustable parameters, where the parameters can automatically be adjusted for an individual packet in accordance with the category into which is classified.

Abstract: A method and an apparatus for transmitting error-tolerant data is disclosed employing the ARQ technique, wherein the retransmission of erroneous data is performed up to the point where the remaining amount of errors is acceptable (for instance because the erorrs will not be perceived by the recipient of the information, which can be a person or a higher level protocol with additional error correction capabilities). The number of data blocks (RLC) detected as erroneous is employed to define a reliability measure (RM) and a request for retransmission of the erroneous data blocks is performed until a desired reliability threshold (RT) is reached. An additional threshold with a higher value than the first one can be employed to request for optional retransmission when the reliability measure (RM) is between the first and the second threshold. The retransmission will be performed only if further conditions such as channel availability are met.

Abstract: Communication method and system for transmitting data partitioned into a plurality of data packets between at least two communication units (CU1, CU2, CU4) using a communication network (N). During temporary interruptions of transmission of data packets via the communication network some of the transmitted data packets are lost. The invention allows to avoid the loss of data packets due to temporary interruptions of the communication network by determining at the sending data processing device, based on information received from the communication network, which data packets are lost or will be lost during transmission due to a temporary interruption of the communication network. The method can be used for data transmission via mobile communication networks and an "Internet". To allow a retrieval of lost data packets, data packets scheduled for transmission can be temporarily stored in a temporary storage devices. Transmission of packets, retransmission and other services needed for data communication can be performed by an appropriately modified TCP/IP protocol set.

Abstract: The invention relates to method and device for improving the link configuration speed of high-latency links, such as circuit switched links or satellite links, that use chatty protocols, which require sequential configuration phases, such as standard PPP in accordance with RfC 1661. In the initial link configuration phase, a standard LCP packet is sent out, followed by at least one masked packet that will be discarded silently by a peer operating in accordance with the standard protocol, but whose contents will be processed by a peer operating in accordance with the invention. The initial standard LCP packet produces compatibility with the standard protocol, whereas the sending of masked packets containing configuration information (PAP, CHAP, ICPC, etc.) allows two peers operating in accordance with the invention to accomplish the configuration phases in parallel, such that a link can be configured and ready to transmit network level packets, such as 1P packets, much more quickly than with the standard protocol, such as PPP.
