Abstract: PURPOSE:To form optical fiber couplers with slight unevenness in characteristics by connecting optical fibers each having a Y-shaped tapered branching part to both ends of a waveguide. CONSTITUTION:Two optical fibers are adhered parallel to each other, melt- bonded by heating and drawn. The central part of the resulting drawn fiber is cut to form a Y-shaped tapered branching part 1. Such parts 1 are connected to both ends of a waveguide 2 having a prescribed shape to produce an optical fiber coupler. Such characteristics as a desired branching ratio can be obtd. independently of conditions in production in accordance with the shape of the waveguide 2 and optical fiber couplers with slight unevenness in characteristics are produced.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To optimize the curvature of the spherical surface of the tip of an optical fiber by processing an image, obtained by photographing, enlarging, and displaying the tip shape of the optical fiber which is becoming spherical by a television camera, by a central processor and comparing its curvature with the best curvature. CONSTITUTION:When the tip surface of the fiber is machined into a spherical surface with desired curvature, the image of the fused fiber tip 1A is displayed on a television monitor 21 by using the television camera 20 and processed by the central processor 25. Then when the fiber tip 1A is machined to the best curvature, the supply of gaseous hydrogen and gaseous oxygen to an oxygen and hydrogen burner 10 is stopped under the command of the central processor 25. The surface of the fiber tip 1A which is thus made spherical is compared with the best curvature, and consequently the obtained spherical surface of the fiber tip nearly has the best curvature, the shape of the fiber tip surface becomes stable, and its variance is reduced.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To decrease the wavelength spacing of wavelength multiplex signal light rays which can be separated by feeding one end side of a pair of juxtaposed optical fibers relatively toward a heating means and welding and stretching the optical fibers to each other while detaching the other end side of the optical fibers relatively from the heating means at the speed higher than the feed speed. CONSTITUTION:The optical fibers 1, 2 are welded to each other and are stretched while the one end side 3 of a pair of the juxtaposed optical fibers 1, 2 is fed in relatively toward the heating means 4 and the other end side 5 of the optical fibers 1, 2 is detached relatively from the heating means 4 at the speed higher than the feed speed. The optical fiber pair is heated over a wide range while the one end side 3 and the other end side 5 of the optical fiber pair are moved relatively to the heating means 4 in such a manner and, therefore, the sufficiently long welded and stretched part is formed. The wavelength spacing of the separable wavelength multiplex signal light rays is thereby decreased.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To enable detection of residue of a liquid in a closed container simply without use of a belows tube, by measuring a required time or the like until the liquid begngs to flow out from the start of the injection of a gas. CONSTITUTION:It is assumed that when a gas is injected at a flow rate L into a closed container 2 filled with a gas with a specified pressure P0, time (t) is required until a fluid 4 begins to flow out from the start of the injection of a gas. Here, the required time (t) is primarily determined according to a gas volume VG within the closed container 2. The gas volume VG in the closed container 2 can be determined by measuring the required time (t). Thus, the capacity VL of a liquid 4 held in the closed container 2 can be detected. If a specific gravity rho of the liquid 4 is known beforehand, the weight M of the liquid 4 can be determined from the capacity VL. This enables detection of a residue value of the liquid in the closed container simply using no bellows tube.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled base material having a uniform refractive index distribution in the longitudinal direction by changing the concn. of a dopant along the longitudinal direction of a glass pipe so as to provide a prescribed refractive index profile when the dopant is added during collapsing. CONSTITUTION:A quartz glass pipe 1 is rotated, and an oxyhydrogen burner 2 is moved from the inlet side of the pipe 1 to the outlet side with a positioning device 3. Gaseous Ar is sent to a dopant generator 6 through a controller 5, a generated dopant is mixed with gaseous O2 sent through a controller 4, and the gaseous mixture is introduced into the pipe 1. The controller 5 is controlled with a processor 7 so that the flow rate of gaseous Ar is continuously reduced in accordance with the movement of the burner 2 from the inlet side of the pipe 1 to the outlet side. By reducing the flow rate, the concn. of the dopant is changed along the longitudinal direction of the pipe 1 so as to provide a prescribed refractive index profile when the dopant is added during collapsing.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent the formation f a P-OH group and to manufacture the titled base material with a small loss by introducing a gaseous mixture of GeCl4 with O2 and Cl2 into a quartz glass pipe having a core layer deposited by an MCVD method and by heating the pipe to a high temp. from the outside. CONSTITUTION:A gaseous mixture of SiCl4 with GeCl4 and POCl4 is introduced into a quartz glass pipe to deposit a core layer by an MCVD method. A gaseous mixture of GeCl4 with O2 and Cl2 is then introduced into the pipe, and the pipe is heated to a high temp. from the outside to evaporate formed P2O5. After repeating the deposition of a core layer, the introduction of said gaseous mixture and the heat treatment about 50 times, the quartz glass pipe is compressed to obtain a base material for an optical fiber with a small loss in a longer wavelength zone.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To control the extent of higher-order mode excitation to an optimum quantity of incident light, and use an optical fiber in a maximum transmission band state by providing an adjusting mechanism for the incidence conditions of the optical fiber between a condenser lens and an optical fiber end part. CONSTITUTION:Light emitted by a light emitting element 14 is incident on a lens 11 to obtain a parallel beam P, which strikes a pinhole 13. The striking beam is made incident to a lens 12 through the hole 131 of the pinhole 13. Therefore, the quantity of the incident light beam between the pinhole 13 and lens 12 is small depending upon how large the angles of incidence to spaces A and B encircled with broken lines and solid lines are large. Then, adjusted light beam is converged by the lens 12 and incident on the optical fiber 15. Thus, incidence NA to the optical fiber 15 is adjusted.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce the optical transmission loss of a coated optical fiber by blowing off molten metal on the surface of an optical fiber with a hot gas at the outlet of a molten metal vessel to make the resulting metallic layer coating the surface of the fiber uniform and thin. CONSTITUTION:To coat an optical fiber with a metallic layer for increasing the strength in a uniform thickness, the thickness of the layer is adjusted to about 20mum. By making the thickness smaller, the optical transmission loss of the coated fiber is reduced, so a gas such as N2 is sprayed at high temp. and pressure from lower air dies 6 made of heat resistant material on an optical fiber 11 discharged from the pulling hole 3' of a vessel 3 together with a molten metal 41 such as molten Al stuck to the fiber. Molten Al on the surface of the fiber 11 is blown off to form a thin layer having about 10mum uniform thickness. Thus, a metal-coated optical fiber 12 with a small optical transmission loss is taken out.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To prevent a reduction in the tensile strength of a thin film of a malleable metal coating the surface of an optical fiber due to oxide introduced into the metal by installing a furnace for melting the metal in an inert gaseous atmosphere. CONSTITUTION:A base material 10 for an optical fiber is passed through a heating furnace 2 and softened by heating. An optical glass fiber 11 is drawn from the tip of the material 10, and it is passed through a vessel 8 holding a molten metal 7 with superior malleability such as molten Cu, Al or Sn in an electric resistance furnace 11 to form an optical fiber 12 coated with the metal 7 in 10-30mum thickness. At this time, by feeding an inert gas such as N2 or Ar from a blowhole 91 to the vessel 9 for a metal melting furnace 8, the vessel 9 is filled with a nonoxidizing atmosphere to prevent the partial oxidation of the molten metal 7, thereby preventing a reduction in the tensile strength of the metallic layer coating the fiber 12 due to oxide introduced into the metal.
