    Abstract: Defects in an initial protective coating, particularly a conversion coating, on a metal substrate can be touched up so as to at least equal the original coating in corrosion protection by use of a dry-in-place aqueous acidic liquid comprising: fluorometallate anions; a component selected from the group consisting of phosphorus-containing inorganic oxyanions and phosphonate anions; and an oxidizing agent, preferably a mixture of hexavalent and trivalent chromium. Other preferred optional active ingredients include free fluoride ions, which stabilize the fluorometallate ions against the formation of precipitates, and a fluorinated surfactant. The same composition also forms an effective protective coating over previously uncoated metal, particularly aluminum. The compositions do not contain any substantial amount of silica, which has often been previously used in compositions for similar purposes.

    Abstract: A chromium free conversion coating at least equivalent in corrosion protecti ve quality to conventional chromate conversion coatings can be formed on metals , particularly cold rolled steel, by a dry-in-place aqueous acidic liquid that preferably has a pH value between 0.5 and 5.0 and comprises: (A) "fluorometallate" anions consisting of (i) at least four fluorine atoms, (ii ) at least one atom of an element selected from the group consisting of titanium, zirconium, hafnium, silicon, aluminum, and boron, and, optionally, one or more of (iii) ionizable hydrogen atoms and (iv) oxygen atoms; (B) a component of divalent or tetravalent cations of elements selected from the group consisting of cobalt, magnesium, manganese, zinc, nickel, tin, copper, zirconium, iron, and strontium in such an amount that the ratio of the total number of cations of this component to the number of anions in component (A) is at least about 1:5 but not greater than about 3:1; (C) a component select ed from the group consisting of phosphorus-containing inorganic oxyanions and phosphonate anions; and (D) a component of polymers of hydroxy styrene, modified by substitution on the aromatic rings of the polymers of substitute d aminomethyl moieties, in which the substituents (other than the carbon atom that is directly bonded to an aromatic ring in the polymer) on the amino nitrogen atom jointly contain at least two carbon atoms and at least one hydroxy moiety but neither of these substituents on the amino nitrogen atom individually contains more than half as many hydroxyl moieties as it has carbon atoms, unless it contains only one carbon atom.

    Abstract: An especially effective hydrophilicizing treatment for solid surfaces, particularly those of conversion coated aluminum, is a liquid mixture of water, organic polymer molecules that include sulfonyl/ate moieties, and preferably also a substance made by mixing with aqueous phosphoric acid at least one metal, metal oxide, or metal hydroxide so as to form a transparent liquid mixture. The treatment liquid preferably has a nearly neutral pH and is applied to a substrate and dried in place by exposure to heat.

The molecular weight of the polyphenols used in derivatives of the present invention have molecular weights of from about 360 to about 30,000 or greater. The resulting derivatives of the present invention typically have a molecular weight of up to about 2,000,000 with molecular weights within the range of about 700 to about 70,000 being preferred.
