Abstract: Sealable, opaque, biaxially-oriented, multilayer polypropylene (PP) film (I) is claimed, with a core layer (A), interlayer(s) (B) on one or both sides and outer layer(s) (C) on one or both sides; (a) layer (A) contains a PP polymer or PP mixt., CaCO3 with particle dia. 1-2 microns and opt. other additives, (b) (B) can be the same or different, (c) (B) contain PP polymer or PP mixt. and opt. additives, (d) (C) can be the same or different, (e) at least one layer (C) is not above 0.4 micron thick and (f) (C) is a copolymer of ethylene (E) and propylene (P), (E) and butylene (BU), (P) and (BU), or (E) or (P) and a 5-10C alpha-olefin (OL), or a terpolymer of E/P/BU or E/P/OL, or a mixt. of PP with one or more of the above co- and/or ter-polymers, or a mixt. of 2 or more of the above co- and/or ter-polymers, opt. contg. additives. Also claimed is a process for the prodn. of (I), by co-extrusion of the corresp. polymer melts through a sheet die, solidification by cooling, biaxial stretching and heat fixing, opt. followed by corona or polarised flame treatment of surface(s); at least one outer layer is sealable and is not above 0.4 micron thick.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a multilayer, highly transparent, biaxially orientated polypropylene film which has very good twist properties and is particularly suitable for twist wrapping. The film is characterised in that it comprises in the base layer 70-95% by weight of polypropylene and 5-30% by weight of a low-molecular-weight hydrocarbon resin having a softening point of 130-180 DEG C, and the outer layers contain an antiblocking agent having a mean particle size of 2-5 mu m and optionally contain a polydimethylsiloxane. The outer layers have a maximum thickness of 0.5 mu m. The films furthermore have good mechanical properties of approximately the same magnitude in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The film has been oriented in a balanced manner.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of a biaxially stretch-oriented film having at least one opaque layer is described. The opaque layer is composed essentially of propylene polymer and fillers in a quantity of about 10 to 40% by weight, relative to the total weight of propylene polymer and fillers. In production, the granules are melted in a screw extruder, are forced through a die and are formed by cooling to give a preformed film. The preformed film is then stretch-oriented both along the machine direction and transversely perpendicular to the machine direction and is then heat-set. The fillers are added in the form of a masterbatch to the granules of unfilled polymers. The masterbatch should have a filler content of more than about 30% by weight.
