Abstract: 6-Acyloxy-2-naphthoic acids of formula (I) are prepd. by oxidising a cpd. of formula (II) with O2, in anhydrous acetic acid, at raised temp. and pressure, in presence of Mn ions, or Mn and Co ions, as catalyst. R1 = 1-5C alkyl; R2 = H or 1-5C alkyl. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used in prodn. of polyesters with good properties. Tough liq. crystals are formed by mixts. of (I) and 4-acyloxybenzoic acids. Oxidn. of the acyl gp. -CO-CH2-R2, when R2 is alkyl, gives the acid R2COOH instead of water. If R2 = H, formic acid is formed and is oxidised further to CO2 and water. Less acetic acid is oxidised to CO2 and water than when the catalyst contains Br ions. (I) crystallises out on cooling, and is easily removed, e.g. by filtration, when the liq. can be reused.

Abstract: A process for the production of alkane sulphonyl benzoic acids in which alkane sulphonyl alkyl benzoles of the formula (I) in which R and R are the same or different and are alkyl with 1 to 4 C atoms, but R is not t-butyl, and X stands for H, F, Cl, Br or NO2, are oxidised under high pressure at temperatures of over 120 DEG C with molecular oxygen in acetic and/or propionic acid in the presence of a catalyst soluble therein containing cobalt and bromine ions, and if R is not methyl, manganese ions as well.

Abstract: Compounds of the formula are described in which X is hydrogen, -NO2 or -NH2, and Y is -CH3, -COOH, -CONH2, -NH2 or -N=N-Z, where the group Z is with the proviso that, if Y is the group -N=N-Z, X is only -NO2, and if Y is the group -CH3, X is only hydrogen. A preferred compound is that of the formula which is prepared in a multistep process in which the compounds of the general formula (I) are also produced. The 3,4-diamino compound obtained is suitable for the production of high temperature-resistant polycondensates and mouldings, films and fibres.
