Abstract: The invention relates to a process fox the preparation of vinyl acetate in the gas phase from ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen and/or oxygen-containing gases on a catalyst of palladium and/or compounds thereof, and optionally. in additions gold and/or gold compounds, and, as activators, alkali metal compounds and optionally in addition, cadmium compounds on a support. The support comprises SiO2 or an SiO2-Al2O3 mixture having a surface area of 50-250 m2/g and a pore volume of 0.4-1.2 ml/g, and has a grain size of from 4 to 9 mm. 5 to 20% of the pore volume of the support is farmed by pores having radii of from 200 to 3,000 angstrom and 50 to 90% of the pore volume is formed by pores having radii of from 70 to 100 .ANG.ngstrom.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the preparation of vinyl acetate in the gas phase from ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen or oxygen-containing gases on a catalyst which contains palladium and/or compounds thereof and if appropriate additionally gold and/or gold compounds and, as activators, alkali metal compounds and if appropriate additionally cadmium compounds, on a support. The support consists of cylindrical particles with curved front faces. The support material is aerogenic SiO2 or an aerogenic SiO2-Al2O3 mixture having a surface area of 50-250 m2/g and a pore volume of 0.4-1.2 ml/g, which is formed to the extent of at least 50% by pores having a diameter of 50-200 .ANG.ngströms.

Abstract: Prodn. of catalysts (I) involves (a) washing the ignited support particles with an acid which does not react with silica or alumina, until no more binder cations are washed out, (b) impregnating with Pd and Au or Cd, (c) contacting with a soln. of a base until there is no further change in the thickness of the noble metal layer produced on the particle surface and (d) impregnating with an alkali cpd. Catalyst contains Pd and/or Pd cpds. and alkali cpds., together with Cd cpds. and/or Au or Au cpds., on particles of a SiO2 or SiO2/Al2O3 substrate which is obtd. by pressing with the binder aid consisting of Li, Mg, Al, Zn, Fe and/or Mn 2-26C carboxylate(s), and igniting for 0.25-5 hrs. at 500-900 deg. C in oxgyen-contg. gas, to give a prod. with surface area 50-250 m2/g, pore vol. 0.4-1.2 ml/g and particle size 1-15mm, in which 5-20 vol. % of the pores have radius = 200-3000 Angstrom and 50-90 vol. % have radius = 70-100 Angstrom. Acid in (a) is pref. HCl, H2SO4, H3PO4 or HNO3, pref. HCl, the base in (c) is an alkali hydroxide, and a potassium cpd. is used in stage (d). Pref. (I) is obtd. by mixing glass microspheres (silica/alumina; at least 95 wt. % silica; obtd. by flame hydrolysis) with 10-20C Mg or Al carboxylate, pressing and igniting as above to give 5-7mm pellets, washing for 10-14 hours, with 10-20% HCl, drying impregnating with a soln. of PdCl2 and AuCl3 or Cd salt (chloride, nitrate etc.), precipitating with NaOH soln., impregnating with KOAc and drying; vinyl acetate prodn. is carried out at 120-200 deg. C and 1-20 bar, using a gas mixt. contg. not above 10 vol. % oxygen.

Abstract: The invention relates to improved Pd/K/Au, Pd/K/Ba and Pd/K/Cd supported catalysts, the preparation thereof, and the use thereof for preparing vinyl acetate from ethylene, acetic acid and oxygen in the gas phase. These catalysts are prepared by atomising a solution of the corresponding metal salts by means of ultrasound and then applying it in such limited amounts and within such a limited time to the support particles and commencing the drying thereof, that the catalytically active metal salts cannot penetrate the support particles as far as their core but only an outer part of greater or lesser size.

Abstract: ? HOE 91/F 188 of the disclosure: Carrier catalyst, process for its preparation, and its use for the preparation of vinyl acetate The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a catalyst which contains palladium and/or compounds thereof and alkali metal compounds, and additionally cadmium compounds and/or gold and/or compounds thereof, on support particles which have been pressed from SiO2 or an iO2-Al203 mixture with the aid of a binder which comprises a) washing the roasted support particles with an acid which does not react with SiO2 or SiO2-Al2O3 mixtures, until no further cations of the binder employed during pressing of the support particles are released from the support particles; b) then impregnating the support particles with palladium, and gold or cadmium; c) then bringing the impregnated support particles into contact with a solution of a base at least until the thickness of the nobel metal shell generated in this way on the support particles no longer changes substantially; and d) then impregnating the support particles with an alkali metal compound. A shell-like distribution of the palladium and if appropriate of the gold in the support particles is generated in this manner. Furthermore, the invention relates to a catalyst prepared in this way and to its use for the preparation of vinyl acetate.
