Abstract: A machining center utilizing a traveling-electrode EDM machine (40) in which a thin, continuous electrode element (E) is supplied, transported, guided over a guide member (1) and taken up to provide a continuously renewed span of electrode surface traveling over the guide member juxtaposed in electroerosive relationship with a workpiece (W). The guide member has a guide surface (1a) formed to impart a pre-selected geometry to the span of the electrode element and is detachably secured to a guide holder (50) in the machine. The machining center includes a guide storage station (20) for accepting a plurality of guide members the guide surfaces of which are different in geometry. A guide changing device (30) is operatively associated between the storage station and the machine to exchange guide member therebetween. The machine is also provided with an electrode handling unit (60) for loading the electrode element onto the guide member transferred from the storage station and unloading the electrode element from that guide member to enable the latter to be removed by the changing device and transferred thereby back to the storage station. A numerical control unit (10) is provided to furnish control commands to enable the system functions to be automatically performed.

Abstract: A pulse generator, e.g. for electrical machining such as EDM, is provided which comprises: an on-time setting unit for selectively setting on-times, a first matrix circuit for producing a first output signal on a selected output thereof corresponding to a particular on-time set in the on-time setting unit; an off-time setting unit, independent of the on-time setting unit, for selectively setting off-times; a second matrix circuit, independent of the first matrix circuit, for producing a second output signal on a selected output thereof corresponding to a particular off-time set in the off-time setting unit; a clock pulser for producing clock pulses; a single preset counter for counting the clock pulses; and a circuit for establishing, in the single preset counter, first and second levels to be reached by the clock pulse count in accordance with the first and second output signals, respectively. The circuit is operable, upon the count of the counter in a first mode reaching the first level, to switch the latter to the second level and, upon the count of the counter in a second mode reaching the second level, to switch the latter to the first level, whereby the circuit provides an on-output signal while the preset counter is in the first mode and an off-output signal while the preset counter is in the second mode.

Abstract: An NC-EDM machine is safeguarded against feed errors arising from both mechanical and erosive-machining effects. The disclosed safety arrangement includes two detecting circuit units. The first unit is arranged to respond to NC-furnished driving command signals for producing a first detection signal representative of a commanded relative displacement to be effected between the tool electrode and the workpiece along a programmed machining path in a given time period. The second detecting unit is arranged to respond to effective electrical discharges caused in the EDM gap to produce a second detection signal representative of an actual relative displacement effected between the tool electrode and the workpiece along the path in the given time period. A comparator is connected to the two detecting units for comparing the first and second detection signals to produce an output signal indicative of a deviation of the actual advancement from the commanded advance.

Abstract: A CNC process for displacing a movable member along a path on an intricate surface in a three-dimensional coordinate system is disclosed in which the surface is divided into a plurality of elementary characteristic regions each individually definable as one of different geometrical categories such as toroidal, spherical, cylindrical and planar surfaces. The process comprises establishing a general equation for each of these categories and storing the established general equations into a memory unit for a computer. Data required to adapt each of the stored general equations to a corresponding one of the characteristic regions in the three-dimensional coordinate system are inputted into the computer to reduce the general equations to their respective specific equations in which no more than three coordinates are variable. A sequence of incremental two-dimensional positions defined in the system by first and second coordinates thereof are inputted into the computer to allow it to compute, for each position on the path, the value of the third coordinate from the first and second coordinates and the specific equations, thereby determining the path along which the member is moved.

Abstract: A method of and an apparatus for electroerosively machining a 3D cavity in a workpiece using a slender tool electrode, e.g. in the form of a wire or thin rod, which is generally independent of desired cavity in shape and axially juxtaposed with the workpiece to define a liquid-flooded machining gap therebetween. The slender tool electrode and the workpiece are relatively displaced three-dimensionally along mutually orthogonal three independent axes so that the slender tool electrode moves in a scanning manner over the workpiece surface while an ultrasonic vibration is imparted to the scanning slender tool electrode. A machining wear of the electrode is sensed in response preferably to the vibration signal and the wear-compensation feed is effected to axially advance the slender electrode independently of the three-dimensional cavity-forming movement to the tool electrode and the workpiece.

Abstract: A novel, nonflammable, high-performance and economical machining fluid of the invention contains an organic or semi-organic substance other than hydrocarbons at a proportion of 0.1 to 5% by weight and the balance essentially water. The machining fluid may optionally contain further at least one hydrocarbon oil such as kerosene and transformer oil. The substance should contain at least one element which upon discharge decomposition of the machining fluid in the gap produces an oxide of the element for example, silicon oxide or titanium oxide. As preferred but exemplary, the substance may be water-soluble silicone oil which should preferably be a polyether denaturated silicone oil. The machining fluid is preferably used in a machining method of the open-to-air-gap mode.
