Abstract: A superconducting bearing unit comprises a permanent magnet (26) mounted to a rotating shaft (25) and a superconducting member (27) mounted on the inner periphery of a housing surrounding the shaft. The superconducting member (27) is adapted to be cooled after the shaft has been moved upwards (Fig 1A) until it attains a superconducting condition, so that the shaft is supported in use in a balanced condition between the weight of the shaft and a pinning force comprising an attracting component caused by the permanent magnet and the superconducting member (Fig 1B). The bearing unit may alternatively accept radial loads.
