Abstract:
A probe sheath and probe wire having a memory hook and soft flexibility are used to locate a small presymptomatic breast lesion, wherein the wire is sheathed within the sheathing cannula and both are inserted into the body tissue and directed to the site of the lesion. Thereafter the wire is extended through the sheath to assume its memory configuration and its location is determined mammographically. If re-positioning is necessary the wire may be retracted into the sheath and then extended and re-anchored after the wire and sheath are directed to a new position. When the probe wire location is acceptable the cannula is removed and the probe wire is left as a marker for surgical excision of the lesion.
Abstract:
A pressure-responsive surgical tool assembly includes an inflatable enclosure and a pair of electrodes positioned therein. The electrodes are adapted to contact each other and operatively move away from each other under an increase of fluid pressure inside the enclosure until electrical contact is broken. An electrical lead is connected to each electrode for electrically monitoring the condition of electrode contact. A flexible tubing is connected to the enclosure to provide fluid flow therein to increase the pressure inside. A surgical tool overlies at least one of the electrodes and is adapted to transmit force applied from it to that associated electrode. Application of force by the tool initially causes the electrodes to contact each other and to remain in contact until the pressure inside the enclosure substantially balances the applied pressure from the tool whereupon electrode contact is broken.
Abstract:
A method that includes identifying a desired signal connectivity through a switch matrix, where the switch matrix includes a plurality of switching elements, and where the switching elements are selectively operable in a plurality of states to provide a plurality of signal paths for routing signals through the switch matrix. The method also includes identifying a sorting network model that corresponds to a topology of the switch matrix, applying a sorting algorithm to the sorting network model, and determining, based on the results of applying the sorting algorithm, operational states of the plurality of switching elements to provide signal paths corresponding to the desired signal connectivity.
Abstract:
An improved method for attaching soft tissue to bone by passing a suture through an opening in the bone, e.g., a transosseous tunnel, and affixing the soft tissue with the suture. The improvement, for preventing the suture from migrating through the bone at the end of the opening, includes placing a eyelet into an end of the bone opening and passing the suture through the eyelet, as well as through the opening in the bone, in order to affix the soft tissue to the bone with the suture.

Abstract:
A spinal implant replaces excised tissue removed during spine surgery. This implant includes fasteners which firmly attach it to vertebrae adjacent to excised tissue so as to transmit tension and torsional loads to and from those vertebrae. The body of the implant has through cavities into which bone growth material is placed during surgery. The body of the implant also has a finite modulus of elasticity in compression so as to share compressive loads with emplaced bone growth material and with new bony growth facilitated by the emplaced material and the load sharing.
Abstract:
One version of the invention relates to a laser detection system that includes a ball lens and a plurality of fiber optic bundles placed adjacent the ball lens so that incoming light rays are focused onto the bundles by the ball lens. In one particular version of the invention, a ball lens is one that can provide an almost infinite number of “principal” axes for off-axis light. Each fiber optic bundle is aimed in a different direction from each other bundle so that each bundle will have a different FOV even though the same ball lens is used to focus the incoming light rays.
Abstract:
A guide comprising a tube having a first end and a second end, the tube: A) being configured for insertable acceptance therethrough of a shaft of a tool designed to make cuts in a first vertebra and in a second vertebra simultaneously; B) having tangs extending from the first end thereof, wherein the tangs are tapered to conform to natural lordosis; and C) having a depth stop located on the second end thereof.
Abstract:
An end cut tool for making an end cut in bone is disclosed that comprises: A) a shaft having first and second ends, 1) the first end having a blade attached thereto for making the end cut in the bone, and 2) the second end having a handle attached thereto substantially perpendicular to the axis of the shaft to facilitate rotation of the shaft, and B) at least one interlock located between the first and second ends, the interlock preventing rotation of the blade during insertion into a patient and then preventing withdrawal of the tool during use.
Abstract:
A suture anchor for anchoring one end of a conventional suture to bone comprising a coupling member, at least one barb made of a resilient elastic material projecting form said coupling member, and means for attaching one end of a suture to said suture anchor. The coupling member and the at least one barb and adapted to securely anchor one end of the suture in bone when the suture is attached to the attachment means so that the other end of the suture extending outside the bone can be used to attach objects to the bone. A novel application tool is also provided.
