Abstract: A communication system for relatively high data bit rate RF communication overcomes multipath interference by employing relatively narrow beam antenna sectors and by selecting the best communication path established between two terminals (110, 120), at least one of which has narrow beam antenna sectors (1-6). The communication path selection process includes determining the signal integrity (380) of data communicated between the terminals. One implementation includes the narrow beam antenna sectors (16 & A-F) at each terminal.

Abstract: A data communications system (Figure 1) is described in which variable length messages (Figures 3, 4 and 5) are communicated between a general communications controller (GCC 104) and a plurality of portable and mobile radios (130, 132, 134, 136, 138). The variable length messages (Figure 3) include a bit synchronization field (204), a message synchronization field (205) and a plurality of channel data blocks (203) for efficiently and reliably handling long strings of data or text. Each channel data block (Figure 5) includes an information field (503), a parity field (505) for error-connecting the information field and a channel state field (507) indicating whether or not the radio channel is busy or free. The GCC (104) is coupled to a cellular arrangement of channel communications modules (CCM's 106, 108, 110, 112), which each include a radio transmitter (114, 120, 124) and/or radio receiver (116, 118, 122, 126, 128). The mobile and portable radios (130, 132, 134, 136, 138) communicate with the GCC (104) by way of the CCM's (106, 108, 110, 112).

Abstract: A target device (18) performs the steps of receiving a broadcast message via an out-of-band paging network (14) which message includes an identification of the sourcing device. The subscriber (18) automatically registers, responsive to the receipt of the broadcast message, with a local communication server (22) associated with an in-band communications network (12). The target subscriber (18) then uses the identification of the sourcing device (16) to respond to the communication from the sourcing device (16) to establish a communication path therewith through the local communication server (22). In a preferred embodiment, the target subscriber unit and method reside in an asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network. In this manner, the present invention establishes a direct communication path between the local communications server (22) to which the target subscriber unit (18) is attached and the sourcing device (16) thereby minimizing network trafficking and inefficiency problems.

Abstract: An improved network interface architecture for a packet/fast packet switch is described. This network interface architecture provides for the combination of both voice and data in a single switch using a common packet structure. It allows for the dynamic allocation of bandwidth based on system loading. This includes not only bandwidth within the voice or data areas of the frame, but also between the voice and data portions. The network interface (NI) provides a means (the NI-Bus) of passing all packets through the Network interface or allowing the packet devices to directly transfer packets between one another. The bandwidth allocation can easily be changed because the control and data memories are synchronized to one another. The network interface architecture, according to the invention, allows for the data packets and the control of bandwidth allocation to be controlled by a single switching device. It synchronizes the transfer of the data and the allocation of bus bandwidth. The control of the packet devices can be controlled at a very high bit rate such as, for example, 40 Mbps. It also allows packet devices to directly transfer packets. It allows for easy re-allocation of bandwidth, through the use of the NI Base Registers.

Abstract: Se proporciona un mecanismo para operacion en red, o transmision en cadena de redes de satélites (figura 1, 101-103 y 301-303-) y terrestres (310-317; 340-342 y 350-360).

Abstract: An antenna selection technique is used in an RF communication system in which user modules (UM1-UM5) communicate with at least one node (N1-N2). The UM's (UM1-UM5) and nodes (N1,N2) each have multiple antennae. The combination of each UM and node antenna is evaluated at the UM. Based on at least signal quality, the UM (UM1-UM5) selects its antenna and the best node antenna for use. An alternate antenna is selected if a person is determined to be present in a predetermined area adjacent a UM (UM1-UM5) corresponding to a predetermined RF power level.

Abstract: A unique cellular data telephone system includes a cellular telephone system (CTS 150), a cellular data switch (CDS 170), and a telephone central office (130) for providing both voice and data telephone services to portable and mobile cellular data telephones (CDTs 102, 122) located anywhere in a large geographical area. Each of the CDTs (102, 122) includes a data control unit (DCU 106), a cellular modem (162) and a cellular telephone (108) and associated antenna (110), and connects to a data terminal (104, 124) with keyboard and display. DCU (106) includes memory (302) for storing a CDS telephone number and CDT telephone number, microcomputer (304) with internal memory for controlling data communications between cellular modem (162) and data terminal (104), a duel tone multifrequency ("DTMF") encode (306) for encoding telephone numbers and control signals, a DTMF decoder (314) for decoding DTMF telephone digits and/or DTMF control tones, a buffer (312) for storing transmit data from data terminal (104), and analog switches (308, 310) for coupling DTMF encoder (306) and buffer (312) to the transmit data Td signal to cellular modem (162). If data transmit (104) is inactive for a predetermined time interval, DCU (106) automatically disconnects the cellular telephone call while maintaining the landline telephone call to a data host (140, 141). Once data is transmitted again by data terminal (104), DCU (106) automatically places another cellular telephone call and is reconnected to the landline telephone call.
