Abstract: A communication system and method assigns, such as by marking headers of wireless communication packets, packet classification data to packets to define at least one of the following classes: a control signaling class, such as in-band signaling and control packets, a voice class, a data retransmission class, OAMP class and a data class and wherein each class represents a different transmission priority over a backhaul link. For wireless communication packets associated with the control signaling class and the voice class, the method and apparatus assigns each of the wireless communication packets with additional drop precedent data wherein the drop precedence data defines a further packet drop priority within the control signaling class and the voice class. The apparatus and method drops a queued classified wireless communication packet based on a priority level of assigned drop precedent data and based on the packet classification data.

Abstract: The embodiments disclosed provide a manner of transmitting voice information that strikes an improved balance between voice quality and RF capacity in a CDMA dispatch environment. In general, two half-rate vocoder frames ( 201 and 202 ) are assembled into a single full rate transmit frame ( 200 ) to enable the transmission of alternating full-rate frames. Additionally, an individual CRC ( 203 and 204 ) is provided for each half-rate frame within the transmit frame to allow for partial recovery when frame corruption or erasure occurs. In this manner, system capacity is improved, particularly in the CDMA dispatch environment, while preserving voice quality.

Abstract: To address the need for reducing the wireless data transfer delay without reducing channel utilization, an embodiment of this invention provides for a wireless unit (101), transitioning from a dormant to an active state, to transmit data, such as a data query, at the time of call origination. The Wireless Network delay and the Data Network delay, ordinarily experienced back-to-back, are instead experienced concurrently. The difference in delay experienced between active versus dormant users is thus nearly eliminated. This will motivate network operators to decrease their inactivity timers, and is thereby likely to improve their channel utilization and reduce the cost of packet data services.

Abstract: A communication device converts a bit stream to multiple symbols and provides encryption at a physical layer by shifting a phase of each symbol of the multiple symbols to produce multiple encrypted symbols. Each encrypted symbol of the multiple encrypted symbols is modulated with an orthogonal subcarrier to produce at least one modulated subcarrier and the at least one modulated subcarrier is then transmitted via a wireless link. On a receive side, a receiving communication device receives the transmitted, encrypted symbols and provides decryption at a physical layer by shifting a phase of each encrypted symbol in correspondence with the phase used to encrypt the symbol at the transmit side.

Abstract: In a CDMA wireless communication system (200) a dispatch call can be established between two CDMA mobile stations (202, 226), or between other mobile stations and the CDMA mobile station, or between a CDMA mobile station and a computer(236) located outside of the wireless system. To reduce the delay normally association with call set up in a CDMA system, a dispatch processing network (128, 144) is provided in addition to a telephony switch (118). Dispatch calls and call set up requests are routed to the dispatch processing network from the radio access network (110) which includes base stations (204, 206). Once a dispatch call request is made, while the dispatch processing network begins setting up a traffic channel for the originating mobile communication device, the target is also paged, and upon responding, set up on a traffic channel. The concurrence of establishing radio links with the target and originating communication devices substantially reduces dispatch call set up time.

Abstract: An interconnect communication system is provided that provides for dispatch-type services including Instant Access call set up, talkgroup creation and management, and in-band floor arbitration and mode switching that employ in-band signaling tones. By providing talkgroup creation and management and in-band floor arbitration that are transparent to the underlying network, the talkgroup creation and management and in-band floor arbitration may be implemented in a legacy system without the need to modify the network and regardless of the type of network employed. Furthermore, by providing Instant Access call set up procedures and mode switching procedures that are capable of utilizing modified versions of known messages, the procedures may be implemented in a legacy system in a simplified manner, minimizing the impact of an addition of such procedures to a legacy network.

For portions of the reconstructed frame (e.g., 324 and 344) that do not have corresponding portions in the leg frames with passing inner frame quality indicators, a bit-wise majority rule is applied to select values.

Abstract: To address the need for an interference-efficient method and apparatus to provide CDMA services, embodiments of the present invention adjust the outer loop frame error rate (FER) target on the forward and reverse links (110-113) while providing communication services to remote units (101-102). At times during a service when a link is conveying primarily "empty" eighth rate frames, the FER target for that link is increased. This improves system capacity by effectively reducing the power needed to transmit such frames and thereby reducing the resultant interference.

Abstract: To address the need for reducing call setup time without degrading the originator's service, a RAN (103) transmits a channel assignment message in a paging slot monitored by a target unit (113). The target unit responds to this channel assignment page indicating its availability and location within the RAN coverage area. The RAN then indicates the availability of the target unit to the calling unit (120) that originated the service request. In this way, the originator is able to proceed with the communication service, while the target completes its call setup.
