Abstract: A focusing electron lens having a controllable astigmatism. An auxiliary electrode affects the non-rotationally symmetrical field defined by two tubular electrodes to vary the convergence in one main direction while maintaining it constant in the other main direction. In an in-line electron gun system in a color television display tube, such a lens corrects for the effect of parastigmatic, self-converging deflection coil systems on the focusing of the electron beams.

Abstract: 1532462 Colour television tubes PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 10 March 1976 [13 March 1975] 09522/76 Heading H1D A static convergence device mounted about the neck of a three coplanar beam colour television tube comprises at least two annular magnetic structures which enclose the neck of the tube but are eccentrically arranged with respect to each other and to the longitudinal axis of the tube, and each of which generates a six-pole magnetic field, whereby the beams may be adjusted substantially independently of each other. As described, two structures are arranged one at each mid-point between the centre beam and a side beam, each structure (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) being in the form of a pair of six pole annular magnetic rings (47, 49 and 46, 48, respectively) rotatable with respect to each other to adjust the corresponding side beam. In an embodiment employing electromagnets (Figs. 5, 6 and 7, not shown), independent horizontal and vertical adjustment of each outer beam is obtained by the use, for each structure, of a ring having 12 pole shoes, the coils of which are wound to form two independently energized 6-pole systems, angularly displaced through 30 degrees.

In a dark-trace cathode-ray tube the display screen includes a conducting base layer having more than two external contacts so that selected portions only of the display may be erased by the passage of heating current without affecting other portions. In Fig. 2 an oscillogram on strips 8, provided with contact strips 10, 11, may be compared with a succession of oscillograms on strips 9, provided with contact strips 12, 13. In Fig. 3 a P.P.I. radar display screen has a central contact 19 and a plurality of contacts a to n around its edge. In each radial sweep information is erased just before the writing of new information. The screen may be subdivided into mutually insulated sectors. Uniform heating of each sector may be obtained by decreasing the thickness of the conducting layer towards the edge. The dark-trace material may be potassium chloride and the conducting layer tin oxide, aluminium, platinum, rhodium or tungsten.
