Abstract: Techniques for maintaining packet data connectivity in a wireless communications network are presented. A mobile station detects a change from a first packet control function (PCF) to a second PCF. The first PCF is connected to a first packet data service node (PDSN). The second PCF is connected to a second PDSN. The mobile station consults a database configured to map at least one previously visited PCF to a servicing PDSN. Based at least in part on the consulting, the mobile station observes one from among a plurality of predetermined origination patterns, wherein an origination pattern defines origination functions to be performed by the mobile station. As such, zombie PPP and mobile IP instances may be detected and handled.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for requesting PPP instances from a packet data services network includes a mobile station configured to send an origination message to a packet data service node (PDSN) at which it has arrived upon leaving the vicinity of another PDSN. The message informs the new PDSN of the new location of the mobile station and indicates both the number of dormant PPP instances associated with the mobile station and a service reference identifier for each such PPP instance. A flag within the message may be used to indicate whether the PPP instances are dormant (i.e., whether the mobile station is engaged in a call). Communications channel resources of packet data services nodes are optimized by reducing the information included in messages from the Packet Control Function network element to the Packet Data Service Node network element, and by reducing the use of Mobile Internet Protocol agent advertisement.

Abstract: A method and a wireless communication device capable of flow controlling data to be sent from a TE2 device over a Rm interface when PPP renegotiation occurs over a Um interface. Flow control is asserted by the MT2 device by means of manipulating electrical signaling of a physical interface between the MT2 device and the TE2 device. A second embodiment provides a method and a wireless communication device for buffering data on the MT2 device when the PPP renegotiation of the Um interface occurs. Abstract: An improved method and system for transmitting a stream of data bytes through a channel (506A, 506b) whose capacity may change during transmission. By utilization of selective regions of sequence number space, the enhanced radio link protocol (RLP) (140, 142, 144) provides the benefits of large byte sequence numbers while transmitting a fraction of the sequence number bits in the majority of over-the-air frames. Frame header sequence numbers are shortened by dividing the byte sequence number by a page size, and by performing a modulo function on the byte sequence number.

Abstract: A novel method and apparatus is disclosed for performing seamless handoff of a mobile station (MS) between Radio Access Networks (RANs) that use different types of wireless interfaces. The described embodiments enable an MS to handoff between different RANs without causing routing ambiguity, and without substantial loss of network data. Upon moving from the coverage area of a first RAN using a first wireless interface to the coverage area of a second RAN using a second wireless interface, an MS determines whether routing ambiguity may result from the change of RAN and, based on the determination, triggers a re--registration of its network address. A foreign agent (FA) within a packet data serving node (PDSN) monitors network address re-registrations are being created for the same MS. Based on this determination, the PDSN terminates redundant R-P network connections resulting from movement of the MS between different RANs.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for allowing a mobile station in a wireless network to perform network authentication in association with mobile packet data services. The packet data serving node (PDSN) does not authenticate the mobile station with an authentication server prior to sending a CHAP success message. Rather, a mobile station is authenticated via an authentication server after the PDSN receives an IPCP message indicating whether the mobile station desires to use Mobile IP in the current session. If the mobile station desires to use Mobile IP, the PDSN uses authentication techniques in accordance with Mobile IP protocols. In the preferred embodiment, if the mobile station does not desire to use Mobile IP, the PDSN authenticates the mobile station querying an authentication server with the buffered contents of a previously received CHAP challenge response.
