Abstract: A user equipment (UE) receives a first synchronization signal (SS) block including a first codeword and a second SS block including a second codeword. Each codeword is based at least in part on a linear encoding of a physical broadcast channel (PBCH) payload. The PBCH payloads include different timing indicators. The SS blocks are received at different times separated by a time increment. The UE determines, based at least in part on the time increment, one or more hypotheses of combined decoding metrics for the first codeword and the second codeword; decodes the first codeword based on each of at least one hypothesis in the one or more hypotheses. The at least one hypothesis includes a correct hypothesis; the UE determines the first codeword based at least in part on an error detection procedure such as CRC verification performed when decoding the first codeword based at least in part on the correct hypothesis.

Abstract: When beamforming (e.g., via a millimeter wave system (mmW)) is used for wireless communication, a base station may transmit beams that are directed to certain directions. Due to the directional nature of the beams in the mmW system, an approach to determine a beam that provides a desirable gain is studied. The apparatus may be a user equipment (UE). The apparatus receives, from a base station, a plurality of signals through a plurality of beams of the base station, each of the plurality of beams corresponding to a respective antenna port of a plurality of antenna ports of the base station. The apparatus receives from the base station a number of beams whose information should be fed back to the base station. The apparatus performs channel estimation for each beam of the plurality of beams from the plurality of antenna ports based on the plurality of signals.

A method of wireless communication at a first wireless device includes identifying a template mapping of a plurality of ports to a first plurality of frequency subcarriers and a first plurality of time periods of a template time-frequency resource grid; mapping a plurality of resource elements of an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) time-frequency resource grid to the plurality of ports based at least in part on the template mapping; receiving a reference signal from a second wireless device, on a subset of the plurality of ports, based at least in part on the mapping; and decoding the reference signal from a subset of the plurality of resource elements based at least in part on the mapping. In some cases, each port of the plurality of ports is associated with a corresponding radio frequency (RF) chain.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described that provide for selecting different uplink transmission parameters for transmission or retransmission of a random access message. A user equipment (UE) may retransmit a random access message to a base station during a random access procedure if an initial transmission of the random access message was unsuccessfully received by the base station. The UE may select a different transmission beam, uplink resource, or transmission power for retransmission of the random access message. The selection may be based on path loss associated with synchronization signals or previous transmissions. The selection may also be based on a maximum number of retransmissions.
