Abstract:
A liquid toner based imaging machine (10) includes a movable photoconductive carrier (11) having an electrostatic latent image thereon. A developing station (15) is provided containing a source of toner liquid (16) that includes charged toner particles. The station (15) is operatively associated with the carrier (11) for contacting the same with the liquid (16) thereby developing the latent image by effecting the transfer of toner particles to the image. The developing station (15) includes a developer electrode (17) charged to a voltage intermediate voltages on the carrier (11) representative of background and information in the image for attracting toner particles to an elemental area of the electrode (17) when the electric field (E) between the carrier (11) and the electrode (17) is directed towards the elemental area. The deposition of toner particles on the surface of the electrode (17) is inhibited during development of the image by coating the surface of the electrode (17) facing the carrier (11) with a fluorosilicone polymer (22).

Abstract:
An ink-jet or bubble jet system (10) in which the ink is sprayed on an intermediate member (12) and transferred therefrom to the final substrate (18). The member is preferably heated (16) to evaporate a substantial portion of the carrier liquid of the ink so as to reduce wicking in the final substrate (18). In one embodiment of the printer a layer of resin is deposited on the surface (14) of the member (12) before the deposition of the image. This layer is transferred to the substrate with the image and protects the image and optionally improves its bonding to the substrate (18).
Abstract:
A method for forming images on a member including the steps of: supplying a layer of liquid toner concentrate comprising charged toner particles and carrier liquid to a space between a first, moving member and a second, stationary member closely spaced therefrom; and selectively applying an electric field between the first and second members and transverse to the direction of motion of the moving member across selected segments of the layer of liquid toner, whereby certain segments of the layer adhere to the moving member in image configuration thereon for a first value of the electric field and other segments of the layer adhere to the second member for a second value of the electric field.
