Abstract: 28,127. Thomas, J. Dec. 20. Couplings, automatic; buffers. - Relates to couplings of the kind described in Specification No. 13,365, A.D. 1899, in which each coupling- head is formed with a pair of hooks g, h, Fig. 4, disposed in such a manner that, when the vehicles are pushed together, the coupling-heads rotate in opposite directions and the hooks on one vehicle slide over and into engagement with those on the other. In order that the coupling-head may act also as a buffer, it is formed in one with boxshaped flanges i having flat buffing-faces i , or it is fitted with a similar buffing-head i, Fig. 10, made in one with a square sleeve j which surrounds the shank a of the coupling-head and abuts against a buffing-spring o. The shank a also passes through a sleeve t surrounded by a draw spring t , and a fixed abutment s is placed between the buffing and draw springs. The hole in this abutment is rounded, and the hole in the end beam is elongated, in order to allow the couplings and buffers to oscillate and remain in close engagement when passing round curves. Springs x, x on a transverse bar y return the couplings to their central position. The coupling-head is fitted with a hand-lever d, Fig. 9, which, by its weight, causes the engagement of the couplings and which serves for disengaging them. The lever works in a guide f, and can be secured by a pin put through holes in the guide. If the buffer head is made in one with the coupling-books, the lever is loosely engaged with the shank of the coupling, as shown in Fig. 12, and its boss e, Fig. 4, is fitted into a sliding plate p working in a guide q and is retained by a lug entering a segmental recess in the plate p. If the buffer head is in a separate piece, the boss e, Fig. 11, of the lever d is engaged with the shank by a key k and fits into a recess in the buffer head.

Abstract: A liquid-crystal display screen comprises a backing layer (17) acting as a light guide for activating light; a liquid-crystal layer (29) containing cells which when suitably addressed allow light to pass from the backing layer through the cell; and an emitting layer containing phosphor-type elements (35, 37, 39) corresponding to the cells, for emitting display light when activating light reaches them. For reducing crosstalk and increasing output there are means (47; 49; 77, 81; 87; 87a) for collimating the activating light towards the phosphor-type elements. The invention allows a variety of configurations to be used, such as birefringent LC displays with side-lighting, and FE liquid crystals in scattering mode. FE LC displays can be produced having a grey scale, using part-time addressing and phosphor persistence.

Abstract: FISHING LURE A weed protector has a body of flexible foam material. The hook portions of the fishing hooks pushes on the outer surface or extend into grooves in the body. When a fish strikes, it can collapse the form exposing the barbed ends of the hooks to the fish's mouth. The body can compress axially to accommodate different sized shanks. The shanks of the hook are attached by a ring to a connector which extends out of the front end of the body, and the flexible foam material permits the connector and the hook to pivot somewhat with respect to each other.The front end of the body is tapered to deflect weed and other debris. The frontmay have a separate, hard cap that prevents weeds from engaging the front of thebody.
