Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain the titled fiber having improved mechanical strength, heat and oxidation resistance and good property of wetting a metal or alloy and low reactivity therewith, by making an extruded polytitanocarbosilane fiber infusible, and calcining the resultant fiber. CONSTITUTION:A polycarbosilane having a main chain skeleton of formula I (R is H, lower alkyl or phenyl) and a number-average molecular weight of 200-10,000 is reacted with a titanium alkoxide of formula II (R' is 1-20C alkyl) at a ratio between the total number of Si-CH2 structural units and the total number of Ti-O structural units of 2:1-200:1 in an inert atmosphere under heating to give a polytitanocarbosilane having a number-average molecular weight of 1,000-50,000. The resultant polytitanocarbosilane is then extruded into a fiber, which is made infusible and calcined in vacuo, an inert gas or reducing gas atmosphere at 800- 1,800 deg.C. Thus, a continuous inorganic fiber containing substantially Si, Ti and C (O) can be obtained.

Abstract: PURPOSE:An organometallic copolymer having heat resistance capable of forming fibers having higher mechanical strength than that of existing SiC and more improved oxidation resistance than that of TiC by means of sintering, consisting of a specific polycarbosilane part and polytitanosiloxane part. CONSTITUTION:For example, A) a polycarboxysilane having a main chain skeleton shown by the formula I, Si with H and side chains, e.g., lower alkyl, phenyl, etc., and a number-average molecular weight of 500-10,000 is blended with B) a polytitanosiloxane having main chain skeleton consisting of a) one shown by the formula II and b) one shown by the formula III in a weight ratio of a/b of 30/1-1/30, Si with the same side chains as in the case of the ingredient A, most of Ti with lower alkyl groups, and a number-average molecular weight of 500-10,000 in an amount to give a ratio of (the total number of the skeleton shown by the formula I) to (the total number of the skeletons shown by the formulas II and III) of 100/1-1/100. The blend is heated in an organic solvent under an inert atmosphere so that Si in the ingredient A is partly linked with Si and/or Ti in the ingredient B through O bond.
