A fan blade includes a blade body and a shape memory alloy actuator. The blade body has a pressure side disposed opposite a suction side. Each of the pressure side and the suction side extends radially from a root towards a tip and extends axially from a leading edge towards a trailing edge. The blade body defines a passageway that is disposed between the pressure side and the suction side. The shape memory alloy actuator is received within the passageway and is operatively connected to the blade body.

The coating includes a bond coat in which a first portion of a first elongated reinforcing material is embedded. A method of forming a metal component with two and three dimensional internal functionally graded alloy composition gradients includes forming the component by a powder based layer-by-layer additive manufacturing process. The areal composition distribution of each powder layer is determined by simultaneously depositing different powders and powder mixtures through a mixing valve attached to a single nozzle during powder deposition. The layers are then sintered with a directed energy source to form a forging preform. The preform is then forged to form a component.

An example multi-dimensional component building system includes a first chamber having at least one base disposed therein, a second chamber adjacent to and in fluid communication with the first chamber through a first door, and a third chamber adjacent to and in fluid communication with the second chamber through a second door. The second chamber is fluidly sealed from the first chamber if the first door is in a closed position. The second chamber is configured to receive the at least one base via a first transfer mechanism if the fluid parameters of the first chamber are approximately equal to the fluid parameters of the second chamber. The second chamber includes a directed heat source and a build-up material configured to form a component on the at least one base by melting or sintering. The third chamber is fluidly sealed from the second chamber if the first door is in a closed position. The third chamber is configured to receive the at least one base, having a formed component disposed thereon, via a second transfer mechanism if the second door is in an open position. The fluid parameters of the second chamber are not substantially affected by fluid communication with the first chamber or the third chamber.

A method is provided for additive manufacturing. This method includes monitoring a current to a recoater blade. The monitored current is compared to a predetermined current. An operation is initiated in response to the monitored current exceeding the predetermined current. Another method for additive manufacturing includes comparing a movement of a recoater blade to an expected movement. A single exposure sequence is initiated in response to movement of the recoater blade being different than an expected movement. An additive manufacturing system is also provided which includes a recoated blade and a control. The control is operable to identify resistance to movement of the recoater blade.

A ceramic turbine component is formed by a process including mixing a ceramic powder with an inorganic binder powder. The powder mixture is then formed into a turbine component that is subsequently densified by transient liquid phase sintering. In an embodiment, the turbine component may be formed by an additive manufacturing process such as selective laser sintering.
