Abstract: A three-dimensional (3D) metal object manufacturing apparatus is equipped with an orifice cleaning system that removes metal drops that have adhered to a plate, an orifice in the plate, and a nozzle ejecting melted metal drops through the orifice during object forming operations. The orifice cleaning system includes an orifice cleaning tool that consists essentially of a soft carbon material, such as graphite. The orifice cleaning tool is configured with a handle that is gripped by an articulated arm to move the orifice cleaning tool against the plate, the orifice, and a portion of the nozzle at the orifice.

Abstract: A printing system comprises a printhead to eject a print fluid to a deposition region. Print media are held by vacuum suction against a movable support surface, which moves over a vacuum platen to transport the print media through the deposition region. The vacuum platen has platen holes through which the vacuum suction is communicated. Multiple vacuum plenums are provided to supply the vacuum suction to different groups of the platen holes. A first vacuum plenum is fluidically coupled to a first group of the platen holes located at least partially in the deposition region, and to a second group of platen holes located upstream of the first group. A second vacuum plenum is fluidically coupled to a third group of the platen holes comprising at least some platen holes located between the first and second groups of platen holes.

Abstract: A printing system comprises a print fluid deposition assembly, a media transport device, and an air flow control system. The print fluid deposition assembly comprises a printhead to eject a print fluid through an opening of a carrier plate to a deposition region. The media transport device holds a print medium against the movable support surface by vacuum suction and transports the print medium through the deposition region. The air flow control system comprises an air supply unit to selectively flow air through the opening based on a location of a print medium relative to the printhead. The air supply unit comprises an air guide structure comprising an air outlet portion extending into the opening of the carrier plate between the printhead and the carrier plate, the air outlet portion terminating in an end wall that is angled obliquely relative to the movable support surface towards a reverse-process direction.

Abstract: A method of operating a printer distributes inkjet operations from frequently used inkjets to lesser used inkjets. The redistribution of the inkjet operations helps reduce the number of inkjets exhibiting cross-process direction error so printhead maintenance operations, such as purging, occur less frequently.

Abstract: A metal object produced by a three-dimensional (3D) metal object manufacturing apparatus is subjected to a high temperature heat treatment to improve bonding of the object layers, especially in the vertical or Z-axis direction. A supporting structure is formed around the metal object to retain the shape and features of the object during the high temperature heat treatment. The supporting structure is formed in a manner that is sufficient to retain the shape of the metal object during the heat treatment but is easily removed once the heat treatment is finished.

Abstract: Nozzles for additive manufacturing and methods for improving wettability of the nozzles are disclosed. The nozzle may include a body having an inner surface and an outer surface. The inner surface may define an inner volume of the nozzle, and may have a water contact angle of greater than 1° and less than about 90°. The method may include subjecting the nozzle to a surface treatment. The surface treatment may include plasma treating a surface of the nozzle such that free radicals, polar functional groups, or a combination thereof are formed at the surface of the nozzle.

Abstract: An adhesive sign suited to use in retail applications includes a substrate layer. An adhesive layer is disposed on the substrate layer. The adhesive layer defines an exposed region for attachment to an associated structure. The adhesive layer is derived from a photo-curable inkjet composition. An ink layer is disposed on the substrate layer. The ink layer includes an image. The ink layer is derived from a photo-curable inkjet composition. The adhesive layer and ink layer can be formed in the same inkjet printing process and cured in a common photo-curing station. A stack of the adhesive signs can be assembled without interleaving a release liner between each pair of signs.

Abstract: A dryer for use in an aqueous ink printer adequately dries coated substrates printed with aqueous ink images before discharge of the substrates. The dryer has a housing, a plurality of laser diodes, a current source, a variable electrical resistance network having a plurality of resistors, and a controller. The controller is configured to identify a plurality of ink coverage densities for a plurality of areas in an ink image that passes through the dryer, select and vary an electrical resistance of one or more of the resistors in the variable electrical resistance network using the identified ink coverage densities, and operate the plurality of resistors in the variable electrical resistance network to connect the laser diodes in the dryer selectively to the current source through the plurality of resistors using the identified ink coverage densities and a speed of the substrate through the dryer.

Abstract: A self-advancing cleaner and a method of operating the self-advancing cleaner. In an embodiment, a rotatable member can engage a transport belt, wherein the rotatable member includes a cleaning surface comprising a surface sufficiently rough to collect and take away ink debris from the transport belt. During a cleaning operation the cleaning surface remains stationary while the transport belt moves in a sliding relative motion with respect to the cleaning surface, which allows the ink debris to be collected on the cleaning surface. Once an ink contamination level associated with the ink debris attains a threshold and a set friction exceeds the threshold, the self-advancing cleaner advances.

Abstract: A cleaning subsystem for a variable data lithography system includes a cleaning roller train having a cleaning member in physical contact with an imaging member such that residual ink remaining on the imaging member, such as following transfer of an inked latent image from the imaging member to a substrate, adheres to the cleaning member through cohesion and is thereby removed from the imaging member. The cleaning roller train uses the ink-splitting mechanics to remove, transport and collect the ink waste. The key cleaning roller train is a thin but uniform layer of ink on the cleaning member that contacts the imaging member causing removal on the residual ink through cohesion.
