Abstract:
An improved slotter wheel mechanism designed for use in the formation of box blanks is provided which includes a rotatable wheel assembly supporting one or more slotter blades; the blades are coupled to the wheel by means permitting shifting of the blades during rotation of the wheel assembly between an extended slotting position and a retracted blank-clearing position. In one embodiment, the blades are supported on respective blade holders each having a cam secured thereto. A stationary yoke plate adjacent the wheel assembly supports a pair of inner and outer cam grooves adapted to receive the blade holder cams. A shiftable, grooved cam switch is operatively interposed in the cam arrangement for selectively directing the blade holder cams into one or the other of the cam grooves, thereby camming the associated blade holders and blades between their respective positions. If desired, use can be made of a sectionalized slotting blade assembly having blade sections interconnected by means of a pivotal, intermediate blade section. In another embodiment, a cam assembly presents a shiftable cam portion which can be shifted to select a blade extended or retracted position and further includes a locking link assembly for locking the blade holder and thereby the blades in the selected position during rotation through the portion of the arc of travel.
Abstract:
A process and an apparatus for preventing a packaging material which is being die-cut and scored from developing cracks. A crack-reducing sheet material (17) is positioned between the cutting/scoring tools (9, 13) and the packaging material (5) to absorb impact energy from said tools and relieve the packaging material of crackproducing forces in the direction of its plane.
Abstract:
The invention is directed to a device for sidewise shifting and positioning of a tool in a slotting station situated within a machine used for processing sheet-like workpieces. The station includes a creasing tool, a counter tool, which are mounted on a first pair of vertical, arranged horizontally extending shafts, a slotting tool and counterpart, both fitted on a second pair of shafts arranged downstream of the first pair, a master plate being held in the transfer direction of the workpiece by two crosswise shafts, one of which is for guiding and the other is for shifting the master plate on the guiding shift, the plate having an arrangement for gripping each of the upper tools of the pairs of tools, which arrangement includes an arrangement for laterally shifting the arrangement for one of the two tools relative to the master plate while holding the tool simultaneously fully parallel to the master plate.
Abstract:
A precrush tool immediately precedes a slotting blade in a slotting tool assembly. The slotting blade is mounted in the same way as a conventional slotting blade with the exception that the top is profiled to give gradual crushing during rotation. The tool's area gets successively larger to the point that the top land equals the width of the slotter blade and its O.D. when mounted is effectively the pitch circle of the tool assembly. This design allows for the air to be removed from the board gradually and produces a sharp clean cut by the slotter.
Abstract:
There is disclosed herein an apparatus for forming container blanks from cardboard or other paperboard-like substrates. The apparatus includes a press, platens, a coated plate member, and a die-and-knife assembly. The coating on the plate is impressible by the back edge of the knife for accommodating irregularities in the machine, platen surface, or knife so as to permit the knife edges to substantially lie in a cutting plane. The coating is generally an organic coating which is liquid just above room temperature and solid at room temperature. The impressions are made in the coating and the coating is then hardened for use by polymerization such as by ultraviolet light.
Abstract:
An adjustable mounting block assembly, particularly for embossing die elements used with cutting, scoring and/or punching dies, having a block adjustably mounted within a frame. The perimeter of the block is spaced from the frame, and adjustable opposed spacers extend between the block and the frame so as to adjust the position of the block within the frame.
Abstract:
Apparatus for imprinting or impressing a sheet of material such as cardboard intended to be made into a die for making a folding box or case, comprises a stamping plate for carrying the sheet and co-operable with a tool. The stamping plate lies on a table plate of a frame structure which has holders for releasably carrying a form which extends parallel to the table plate, and at least one bridge assembly which extends movably above the table plate. A carriage is carried on the bridge assembly and moves transversely with respect to the direction of travel thereof. The carriage carries at least one vertically movable pressure member directed towards the table plate.
Abstract:
Sheets of paperboard or the like are gripped along one end by a plurality of grippers and are drawn by the grippers along a predetermined path for processing. An array of stripper tools mounted at the end of the path strips the body of the sheet free from a waste strip which remains gripped by the grippers. The waste strip is carried away from the stripper tools by the grippers and is subsequently released at another station. The stripper blades are driven by a reciprocating drive mechanism which includes a reciprocating slide, a spring urging the slide in one direction, a rotating arcuate cam flange which periodically blocks movement of the slide and periodically frees it for movement, and another rotating cam which reciprocates the slide through one cycle each time it is free to move.
Abstract:
The invention provides an improved method of forming one or more box blanks (20) from a generally-rectangular sheet of material, comprising the steps of: providing a frame (28) for supporting and guiding the sheet; placing a sheet of material on the frame; controllably moving the sheet in a longitudinal direction relative to the frame; providing at least one longitudinal score line (21) on the sheet as the sheet moves relative to the frame; punching a first hole in the sheet; cutting a first slot (23) in the sheet between one longitudinal edge thereof and the first hole; punching a second hole in the sheet at a position spaced transversely across from the first hole; cutting a second slot (23) in the sheet between the other longitudinal edge thereof and the second hole; providing a transverse score line (22) on the sheet between the first and second holes; punching longitudinal slots in the sheet to severe the flaps (24) from the glue tab (27); and cutting the sheet to the length required for the desired shape and dimensions of the box; thereby to provide a creased and slotted box blank.
Abstract:
Improved slotter wheel apparatus (20) for use in the formation of box blanks is provided which includes a rotatable wheel (22) supporting a shiftable blade holder (24) and a slotting blade (26), with cooperating cam track (174) and follower (86) structure for selective shifting of blade (26) between an extended slotting position and a retracted blank-clearing position. An activation/deactivation assembly (30) allows the operator to separate cam track (174) from follower (88), thereby permitting use of apparatus (20) as a conventional, high speed, fixed blade slotter. A shock absorbing assembly (27) including a bridge piece (138) operably coupled with blade holder (24) and resilient pads (152, 154) serve to absorb potentially destructive mechanical loads experienced during outward shifting of the blade holder (24) and blade (26).
