Abstract: 1355705 Pyrophosphates COMPAGNIE FRANCAISE DE RAFFINAGE 19 April 1971 [16 April 1970] 58053/73 Divided out of 1355704 Heading C1A [Also in Division B1] Neutral pyrophosphate of at least one metal selected from lithium, sodium, strontium and barium is prepared by a method which comprises mixing at least one acid orthophosphate of at least one metal selected from lithium, sodium, strontium and barium with at least one neutral pyrophosphate of at least one metal selected from lithium, sodium, strontium and barium, forming an extrudate from the resulting mixture, and drying and calcining the extrudate in air in order to convert the acid orthophosphate into neutral pyrophosphate. Both the orthophosphate and pyrophosphate are preferably in powdered form when mixed. As exemplified, a mixture of sodium pyrophosphate, Na 4 P 2 O 7 , and lithium sodium double pyrophosphate is prepared by a procedure wherein equal amounts of hydrated disodium orthophosphate and lithium sodium double pyrophosphate are mixed, the resulting mixture is crushed and then wetted with water, and the resulting paste is extruded, dried for 18 hours at 110 C. and then calcined for 2 hours at 500 C. The neutral pyrophosphate may be used as catalyst in the dehydration of vicinal and non- vicinal diols. Reference is made to Specification 1,288,662.

Abstract: 1377217 Catalysts comprising lithium phosphate DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBERSCHEIDEANSTALT 3 Nov 1971 [3 Nov 1970] 51037/71 Heading B1E [Also in Division C2] Catalyst for use in the conversion of alkene oxides to alkenols comprises lithium phosphate having a grain size below 0.1 mm coated on inert support material having a particle size between 1 and 20 mm. The support material may be in the form of moulded elements, such as spheres, having a smooth, rough or fluted surface, for example spheres having a fluted surface and a diameter between 1 and 10 mm.; specified support materials are alpha-alumina, porcelain, quartz and silicon carbide. The lithium phosphate may be in admixture with filler material, for example in an amount of up to 50 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of lithium phosphate; specified filler materials are active carbon, kieselguhr, asbestos and talc. The catalyst may be prepared by a procedure wherein lithium phosphate is applied to support material either in the absence of liquid with subsequent application of liquid to the coated support material or in the presence of liquid, for example by the use either of moist lithium phosphate or of dry powdered lithium phosphate with application of liquid to the lithium phosphate and/or the support material at the time of application of the lithium phosphate to the support material; the liquid may be water and/or a water-miscible organic liquid, for example methenol or ethanol. The lithium phosphate coating may have a thickness of 0.1-2.0 mm and may be in the form of superposed layers. As exemplified, catalyst is prepared by a procedure wherein spheres of alpha-alumina having a rough surface and a diameter of 3-4 mm are rolled in powdered lithium phosphate, sprayed with water and dried.
