Abstract:
This invention provides a process for electrostatically applying a coating composition onto dielectric materials which have a dielectric constant less than 4.0. In this process, a positive charge is induced onto a coating composition. The dielectric material is electrically isolated, negatively-charged, or both. The positively-charged coating composition is sprayed onto the dielectric material. If the dielectric material is charged negatively, the process of the present invention further includes the step of maintaining at least a portion of the negative charge on the dielectric material while positively-charged coating particles are being sprayed thereon.
Abstract:
The invention relates to the use of a conducting fibrous web incorporated in a plastics article at or below the surface of said aricle for providing conduction for the electrostatic application of a coating to said surface.
Abstract:
A system (10) for coating articles (A) by the use of electrostatic attraction of ionized particles which are subsequently cured. The system includes a pair of carriers (44) for jointly carrying each article (A) through the system, from application of the particles to the article through curing of the particles on the article. Each carrier (44) is capable of carrying the article independently of the other. After deposition of the particles on the article (A) the article (A) and the carriers (44) are conveyed through a cleaning station (14) wherein one of the carriers (44) is moved out of carrying engagement with the article and cleaned while the article (A) supported by the other carrier (44). The other carrier (44) is then moved out of supporting engagement with the article (A) and cleaned while the article (A) is supported by the first carrier (44). The system also includes a spray booth (12) for depositing the particles on the article (A) which limits the exposure of the carriers (44) to the spray of particles and includes a removable replaceable insert (60) to eliminate the need for cleaning the spray booth when there is a change in the nature of the particles being used, such as color.
Abstract:
A method of and apparatus for the electrostatic application of a coating material on a product of either electrically conducting or non-conducting material. The product is caused to descend from a hopper (10) in free fall in the form of spaced curtains (28, 30) across two streams (40, 42) of electrostatically charged coating material directed laterally of the curtains from opposite sides thereof. The rate of flow and spacing of the curtains (28, 30) is adjustable (32, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 26) as required depending upon the nature of the product and the properties of the coating material. Charges of opposite polarity are applied respectively to the two streams with the result that an electrostatic charge opposite to that of a stream is imparted to that side of each of the two curtains towards which the stream is directed causing attraction between the coating material and the product. The uniformity of the applied coating is much improved as compared with conventional techniques.
