Abstract: A semi-permanently installed, permanently built-in or portable message machine (10) is provided. Abstract: A portable, self-contained data acquisition and recording system for monitoring ambulatory subjects. The system has micropower requirements and an extended recording capability between battery (50) replacements. A prepolarized magnetic tape (18) is employed and recording is accomplished by selectively reversing the polarization at a time when the tape is at rest. A microprocessor (32) is provided for processing signals and for controlling circuit operation such as a tape drive incrementer (48). The microprocessor also controls the preprocessing (42) and digitizing (44) of signals for further processing by the microprocessor and enables the delivery of digital signals to be recorded to a magnetic tape head (45) positioned in operative relationship with the magnetic tape. Selected circuits of the system are selectively powered up and powered down during monitoring as needed to provide continuous power control for optimization of power usage.

Abstract: A microcomputer system for converting an analog signal, such as an audio signal representative of sound into a digital form for storing in digital form in a highly condensed code and for reconstructing the analog signal from the coded digital form. The system includes reductive analytic means where the original digital data stream is converted to a sequential series of frequency spectrograms, signal amplitude histograms and waveform code tables. Approximately 100 times less storage space than priviously required for the storage of digitized audio signals of high fidelity quality is thereby obtained. Additive synthesis logic interprets the stored codes and recreates an output digital data stream for digital to analog conversion that is nearly identical to the original analog signal.
