Abstract:
Novel monodispersed crystalline mixed metal layered hydroxide compounds of the general formula are prepared: Li.sub.m D.sub.d T(OH).sub.(m+2d+3+na) A.sub.a.sup.n, where m is an amount from zero to 1; D is a divalent metal; d is the amount of D ions of from zero to 4; T is a trivalent metal; A represents anions or negative-valence radicals of valence n; na is from zero to -3; (m+d) is greater than zero; and (m+2d+3+na) is equal to or greater than 3. The D metal is preferably Mg and the T metal is preferably Al. These compounds are useful as gelling agents which impart beneficial thixotropic properties to various fluids, such as drilling fluids, especially when employed along with fluid loss agents.

Novel aqueous lubricant dispersions contain at least one rare earth halide, e.g., cerium trifluoride, and at least one polymeric dispersing agent therefor, such at least one dispersing agent including:(a) a copolymer of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or derivative thereof with an .alpha.-olefin comonomer and/or a vinyl comonomer;(b) a homopolymer or copolymer of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or derivative thereof;(c) a copolymer of at least one ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and at least one ethylenically unsaturated sulfonic acid comonomer; and/or(d) a polymer of an alkylene oxide of an (arylalkyl)phenol, or phosphated or sulfated derivative thereof.
Abstract:
The invention relates to thickened fuctional fluids. The functional fluids can be used in hydraulic systems or as metalworking compositions to cool and lubricate surfaces which are in frictional contact during operations such as the turning, cutting, peeling, or grinding of metals. The functional fluid contains a diluent, a dialkyldithiophosphate, a compound which is a source of molybdate ion, a polyether nonionic surfactant, and an associative polyether thickener.
Abstract:
A lubricant additive for gear oils and an improved gear oil are disclosed. The additive comprises about 0.01 to about 65 percent, by weight, of solid lubricant particles selected from the group consisting of molybdenum disulfide, graphite, cerium fluoride, zinc oxide, tungsten disulfide, mica, boron nitrate, boron nitride, borax, silver sulfate, cadmium iodide, lead iodide, barium fluoride, tin sulfide, fluorinated carbon, PTFE, intercalated graphite, zinc phosphide, zinc phosphate, and mixtures thereof; combined with about 0.1 to about 25 percent, by weight, of a stabilizing agent consisting of an ethylene-propylene copolymer; and a fluid carrier. The lubricant additive provides the gear oil with improved demulsibility, stability, and compatibility characteristics of the gear oil when contaminated with water.

Abstract:
A lubricant comprising a partially defluorinated graphite fluoride obtained by exposing a dispersion of raw material graphite fluoride to electromagnetic radiation, followed by the separation of the resulting partially degraded graphite fluoride. The partially defluorinated graphite fluoride is not only excellent in lubricating properties but also has excellent compatibilities with resins, greases and oils. The excellent compatibilities of the partially defluorinated graphite fluoride are effective in preventing the unfavorable deposition of the graphite fluoride in a liquid lubricant composition and advantageously lead to improvement in the moldability of any graphite fluoride-resin composition, thereby enabling the ultimate composition to exhibit excellent lubricating properties.
Abstract:
A friction material member particularly useful in high load and temperature applications and a method for making the same are disclosed. The friction material member is made by preparing a mixture of sinterable metal particles, carbonaceous material, friction enhancers and curable polymeric resin; the mixture comprising at least about 50 percent by weight of metal particles and sufficient resin to coat and bond the metal particles, carbonaceous material and friction enhancers. The mixture is molded and the resin cured to form a piece in a solid preformed shape corresponding to the shape of the mold. Thereafter, the preformed piece is heated in a substantially oxygen free atmosphere for a time and at temperatures and pressures sufficient to fuse at least a portion of the metal particles into a sintered metal matrix. The preformed piece may be sintered to a metal backing plate during the heating step, or may be welded, brazed or soldered to the plate after heating. The resulting product may be classified as a hybrid friction material, i.e., being a cross between semi-metallic and sintered full metallic friction materials.
